Downsizing can be most difficult

Julie,

What you have done so far is amazing to me. You could set yourself a goal with the RIR's and give yourself a time frame. If at the end of that time frame you haven't met the goal you can re-evaluate the situation, at that point decide if it is still worth it to continue on. Plus you gotta have eggs to eat...

Well yall are so sweet to say such nice things about my RIR'.s They are really a good flock of birds. My neighbor, Just likes to hatch has hatched quite a few of them and I think he will be able to show if we can find anything close by where you can show standards
Tonya We did hatch a few Rosecombs this year and neighbor has kept one of the Roos. He may want to work on that end of it. If only food prices would come down. Yikes

I too am struggling with my decision about your pretty RIRs!! I haven't had a RIR roo for years.....I've had a couple of nasty, mean ones years ago. I'm debating whether to keep one of the 2 I've got. I had gotten the eggs just because I love how dark red yours are and wanted a couple pullets to add to my laying flock.

I am re-organizing more than downsizing. All of my current birds are going up for sale soon and it is killing me. The thought of not having Cornelius is sad to me but if I want to start breeding on my tiny suburban acre he has to go along with every one else. I think I can get away with three pens. So far the only breed I am working on getting stock for is the LF Brown Red Ameraucana. I know at some point I want Splash Silkies. I also know I want Orpingtons and Araucanas but I have not decided which colors to work on. I LOVE your RC RIR's Julie. I have 1 hen from your stock and she is my pride and joy and may end up bing head hen over my Brown Red Flock. I am in awe of Josephine's beauty every time I see her. So if I were you as far as the RIRs go I would just work on the RC RIR and keep a smaller flock of say 8 total.

Good Luck and Remember me if you sell off your Splash Silkies.
