Draining Fluid Question

I have a duck who I have to drain fluid from every few months. She's 3 1/2 years old and lives a happy life, but I can tell when it's time to drain because she slows down a bit and can't keep up with the others.

I don't think it's technically ascites — the fluid is dark brown. But I've been draining it for nearly two years without issue, and she is usually super peppy and active afterwards.

I just did it today for the first time in several months, but she bled where I punctured her. She's never done that before. I was able to get a good bit off of her and afterwards, she seems happy and back to normal, but the bleeding is concerning me that I did something wrong (even though I did exactly what I always do). I know there is not much I can do if I did do something wrong, but I'm just curious for the future (if she has one).

You probably hit a vein. I do it all the time when giving myself my own shots. They can definitely be hard to see under all those feathers!

Have corn starch on hand to apply to it to help stop the bleeding. Yarrow is also very good for this! It grows all over the place here so I always have some dried that I can easily powder.

Thanks. I will definitely do that next time. She seems okay and didn't bleed anymore in the pen, so, I bet you are right.
