One of my call drakes is hunched and waddling/ walking all hunched this evening. He is in a pen with his mate and another pair. Never any issues until i noticed him hunched. Then the other drake and him started fighting. I noticed dried blood on the other guy's leg (that isn't hunched). I separated the pairs for the evening. They don't like me to touch them but the hunched guy just sat there while i picked him up and checked him out. Nothing visibly wrong. Keeping them separated for the night. Any ideas?

He is walking a bit better but still looks like he has that hunched look a little. I made sure he didn't have a prolapse last night. He is soaking in his water tub this morning. I wonder if I should separate him with a panel from his mate so he isn't trying to mate.

Hopefully he just needs more time, then! If he's trying to mate, that would probably be best.

Update. I came home at lunch and he's still walking oddly but not as bad. He did make a beline for the other Drake as he neared the fence he's in. I then noticed that both boys seem to have a swollen shut eye. See attached. I was able to open each of their eyes. How I missed that yesterday evening I don't know. I guess I was so focused on the way he was walking and the other drake with a little blood on his leg. I'm going to flush both their eyes was saline. Any other ideas?

They've gotten along for the last 4 months just fine. Never any issues. They each have their own girl and they mate their girl and never try to mate the other. Only one girl is laying eggs right now.

My guess is mate season is starting up and they are just protecting what they feel is their property
I run a flock of 11 girls and 5 boys
One of my boys fights with all the boys come mate season to protect his girl
Where all the other boys seem fine
You may need to keep the pairs separate during high mate season or try adding more girls
I have had to separate my one boy and his lady from the group already as my ducks are in full swing

Thank you for responding. Have you ever had one that appears to have trouble walking and be in a constant mating hunch? Its the oddest looking walk.
No but I did have one get his boy part bit in the water after a mate. They must have though it was a worm
It did cause a little prolapse and he wasn’t eating due to pain. After some care and mediam it eventually went back up and he went back to normal
Although when he has a poo now it comes out and he has to rock to get it back in
I’m wondering if maybe while he was trying to mate if the other drake jumped on him
Im assuming they are young and just hitting their hormone cycle
Eventually they will go after the other female not just their own partner and some drakes get very upset over this
That’s why I have issues
My khaki and his lady pekin are together non stop but she seems to be every drakes first choice and my khaki won’t tolerate it
The other girls have certain drakes that stick by them but if another boy comes they don’t mind sharing
It’s all in the drake themselves

I had a drake pen last year with three drakes. They went from best buddies one day to their own worst enemies the next day (also happened early spring). Two of them decided to gang up on the other drake and ripped at his eyes along with giving him a pretty good limp. He fully recovered, but his one eye did swell shut for a couple of days and he stayed sitting in the corner of a separate pen for a bit. Besides separating him I put Terramycin on his eyes and gave him a dose of poultry cell every day for two weeks.

Thank you for your response! I have the two pairs separated. We're also expecting a big snow and some negative temperatures and windchills (AGAIN) starting tonight through Thursday. I had to throw together another make shift indoor pen so I could keep the two pairs separate indoors, as well as, away from the larger birds. The 4 of them used to be able to be in the Indoor pen together up until last night. Grr. I put rinsed their eyes with saline and put some colloidal silver in each. I also gave them some orally. I will do that couple times a day over the next few days. I can't remember if I have any terramacin in my animal medicine cabinet. I'll have to look. I know I have biomycin injectable, which I use on my chickens from time to time.

When you say your Drake was limping for a few days? Was he in a hunched position, kind of looking like he just got done mating all the time when he was walking? Mine will take a few steps in the hunch position and then settle back in to lay down.
