Dreaming of Spring Chickens

Love the simple life myself. about your veggies- hmm- the chickens make good fertilizer for your gardens and scratch the stuff in for you= after it has cured. Only problem is keeping the chickens out of the garden until the plants can survive for themselves. LOL. My hens pecked all the peppers, okra, carrots and beets out of my garden- they sure love their tender greens. Next year- netting. Good luck with all. Love orpingtons- I have 4 myself. Plus a Marans and a Welsummer.

Why is the title of that video: This doesn't work?

I'm working towards BTE. Have planted an orchard, and have tried underplanting with corn, sorghum, and bush beans. Both corn and bush beans were a dismal failure due to soil not being built up yet. Plan to repeat with beans to help soil to improve.

BTE in garden is slow going due to huge amount of chips required. But, plants are doing very well, especially potatoes with BTE approach.

I am convinced that BTE is a worth while gardening method, but it requires an incredible amount of work to get established. Once a good layer of chips is built up, it should be fairly easy to maintain by topping off chip layer every season.

The title is a Paul Gautschi quote! He is actually quoting his naysayers. He has had scientists come to his garden and tell him how this or that or the other thing doesn't work. Then he turns around and proves them wrong! They say he can't grow grapes in his environment. He grows more than he can use. They say he can't grow strawberries under trees. He has strawberries growing late in season under trees while strawberries in garden are finished. He is the starter of BTE. He KNOWS it works. Don't let the title throw ya. Sounds like you are right on track. Paul says first year isn't so good, but second year is productive. Third year is even better. After that and you'r feeding most of it to the chickens cuz you have too much. I love that. I just started working the BTE method myself. I too am sold on it. Been talking about chickens for years and finally took the plunge because of Paul Gautschi and BTE. Good luck to you!
