Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

I used to love turkey, but I quit eating meat a few years ago. I also don't eat dairy. I'm an almost-vegan. I do eat eggs, but only ones from my own flocks because I KNOW they are living great and healthy lives. I have the vet bills to prove it!

Looks like yesterday was the last "good" weather day; rainy today with freezing temps ahead. I think I will spend the day catching up on shows I have on DVR or books that I've meant to read. Both sound like more fun than house cleaning. Or, going out to clean coops in the rain.

I put up tarps on two more sides of the goats' shelter yesterday and under the young chickens' coop so they would have more space to hang out. I really want to switch them to a larger coop, but I'm waiting for everyone else to finish their molts, which are stressful enough without relocating birds. The new order will require a three-coop switch.

Still no more signs of rats (and Lisa, if they did travel to your place, you have my sincerest apology and massive gratitude!!). I can't really put the former-resident chickens back in their old coop because the side walls were so heavily damaged by the rats. I'm trying to figure out ways to fortify the little pre-fab so it stands up until spring, when ideally, I can get the original coop repaired.

Hurray for the kind tractor guy!

Although Winter won't officially arrive for another month, it sure feels as if she's unpacked her bags here already. Yesterday was cold and massively windy, and a large branch came down on the run for the new, prefab coop where I've had to relocate chickens.

It didn't break the wood, but it did take a chunk out of the not-thick-enough frame. The wind also moved the windbreaks that I thought I had fastened down sufficiently to give those birds some sheltered outdoor space. I've been trying to figure out how to repair their original coop so Billy and the girls can move back into it.

Before 3 a.m. today, I had already been met with two challenges: feuding cats in the basement (my poor senior girl, stuck with all the flighty newcomers) and my blind dog getting his ID tag caught in the fencing along the deck.

In the dark, it really was a matter of the blind trying to lead the blind because I couldn't see how he managed to snag the wire fence -- and he was panicking because he couldn't walk away. A headlamp and a pair of pliers solved the crisis.

All that before I could even have coffee!

Barb, go back to bed and start all over.
I am still trying to put a beer recipe together.
there are so many online. some of them are really complicated. all I want is one basic simple one to get started.
It is cold here, too. I have to move Ollie out of the garage so Annie can get her car in.
We are not going to cook for Thanksgiving. Annie and her sister and I are going out to eat.
every body else has their own plans.
DD Brenda is making LaSagna for Christmas.
she makes the best.
Our turkey can spend another year in the freezer.
The VA did not pass out turkeys and hams this year. Last year they set up in the county fair grounds. the greedy county charged them a stiff fee for that. greedy bass turds..

Something came through the yard last night and Brew lost his dang mind LOL I took him out on a long line AFTER making sure the critter was NOT in the vicinity LOL we turned the outside light on plus got flashlights and stuff. 🤣😭🙈 but yeah. He was sniffing, marking, barking, the whole nine LOL sliced my finger on the leash too 😭😭😭🤣

I enjoyed the snow yesterday and overnight. It's mostly gone now. I'm sure more will be on the way soon. Not a fan of that bitter north wind.

We ended up putting my goat down so he wouldn't suffer anymore being so thin, and winter coming. Down to 3 now. Donkey wishes it was none.

Barb glad you were able to free your old dog. Mine don't wear collars or tags here. One once got it's tags caught in the floor vent, another time one got it's jaw caught under another one, and the final thing was skiddish stray dog went through our yard with a front foot stuck in his collar. He would not stop, and I never knew what happened with him.

My turkeys keep fighting. You can come here Jim and get a free turkey. It will stay fresh as long as you want it to. That does stink about the VA. Hopefully next year they figure out some else.

Husband left for the hunting shack in Adams county. On my own for a few days. I woke up this morning with an urgent need for ice cream, so I drove to town and bought some at Kwik Trip. Will be good after supper.
