Drip waterers

My biggest issue with my standard waterer isn't the chicks... it's my 3 year old son!!! He thinks it's great fun to dump it over in the brooder. I'm going to look into the other kind today.

Whoa, these really work with chickens? I was worrying about how dirty the water pans were going to get, but now I'm thinking if I can bottle train them, that'd be beautiful.

Here's a question, though--can they be weaned off? I'm thinking for once they're adults, and it's wintertime, because it's far easier to keep a pan ice-free, than the bottles (we've got meat rabbits, they're on bottles, and they freeze up almost immediately on the bad days).

There is excess water that comes out when hey puck, but I have a hardware cloth covered pan under it to catch drips in the brooder. I would like the Water buddy, but they only have the heated one here, & don't need that. It works differently.

I put a large dish with gravel rocks in it beneath the brooder waterers as it is. So I have any drips taken care of. Bought a bunch of em at Big Lots for next to nothing. Sometimes I get them at the thrift store.

My chicks never touched the nipple/ball waterer, they preferred the traditional waterer.

For guinea pigs and such we just put a brick or flat stone under the waterer. The water is somewhat absorbed by the rock or brick and then evaporates into the air. The bedding stays dry that way. It hasn't been a huge problem with my chickens yet though. The guinea pigs like to play with the bottle and shove the ball up with their tongue to just let the water run out.
