Drone Camera flying Over My Chickens

A few months ago someone in my area had a drone with a very long range and was amusing himself by buzzing my steers. It was obviously intentional and was coming quite close to them and to me when I went out to see what the commotion was all about. I called my husband out with the shotgun, and when he appeared and took aim,the stinkin' drone took off and went all the way across the highway to the foothills a good mile and a half or more before I lost sight of it. It has not been back since, but we will be quicker with our response if it returns. Respectfully, I hope anyone using a drone to get close to livestock will limit himself to his own animals as the original poster did. What happened at our place was not funny.

Like I quoted.. fun for a few moments.. Everyday.. no way. Friend of the family had permission to do this. A stranger down the street would not be tolerated for very long.
I never understood the controversy until I saw this in real life. You don't fully understand an argument unless you are part of it. He flew it over our herd once and that was it because of their reaction.. The chickens tolerated it a lot better than our herd.

I understand Farmer Connie! We live above a kind of dodgy low rent district which is 7 miles away down a very winding highway. My guess is that the drone operator bothering our animals was not from our community. We get their animals dumped up here and such all the time.

Closer than you think. Unless they broke the GPS link. They are regulated only to go so high or so far. Also limited from distance from the controller on the ground handheld.
Our friends could only go so high before the brain stopped it from doing so. And if it starts to leave range it returns home. Also you are supposed to have a license to transmit the video signal. We learned a lot during our little BBQ get together.

What I mean is that I think the operator of the drone came up here from elsewhere to fly it around in a more sparsely populated area-not that they were doing it from 7 miles away. I can't imagine someone who actually lives here purposely spooking livestock. I don't know much about drones, but did find out, by calling the sheriff, that knocking one out that is causing mayhem in your property is "a gray area" of the law. I guess a few cases will have to go to court or something to get it clarified.

The problem on drones is the airspace and aircraft are regulated by the FAA not the states so shotgunning one intentionally is a federal offense. However states can have laws about harassing livestock and such. If you had been throwing clay pigeons and your husband had a flyer, oh well! Accidents do happen.
