Hi all, I have some spitzhauben chicks that are 5 weeks old and a couple have gotten sick and died. they just stop eating and drinking. They look sleepy and no energy. I was using pine shavings, but lost one chick, so I switched to sand (bagged play-sand from Home Depot) They seemed to be doing better, but I just lost another chick today and now another one is not looking good. I am feeding them Dunmore medicated chick feed, grit, occasional watermelon, oranges and zucchini. I've also given them save-a-chick electro lights and probiotics in their water. I did try to hand feed them water with a dropper, but they seemed like they could not swallow well and gapped ? Any ideas? Please help me save my babies.

I am incredibly new, not sure what could be wrong. I wanted to mention I have read to stay away from feeding them citrus. Could it be cocci? What does the poop look like? When they get droopy are you separating those chicks, adding sugar to their water? Also what about ACV with the mother added to everybody's water?

Yes it could be cocci
Bloody poo does NOT always have to be present for them to have coccidosis. Its dependant on the strain they have. There are 9 strains of cocci. Corid kills all 9strains of the cocci and that's what I would use to treat them with. Symptoms of cocci are sleepiness lethergie ruffled feathers and may or may not have bloody poo. Corid is the medication I would choose to treat with. Best wishes
