Hi everyone! I could use some help. Our 6 year old Blue Cochin hen has had a droopy eye for over a month now. It’s the right eye only. She is from a hatchery so she is very old considering most hatchery hens don’t make it to 10. She 1/2 of our last hens from our very first batch. Other than the droopy eye she seems completely healthy. No runny nose, no runny/bubbly eye, no cough, her poop is heathy, she eats and drinks well she even still hunts for bugs and flys, has dust baths all the usual stuff. I know her breed typically has eye sight issues and since she was little hasn’t had the best eyesight but she’s certainly not blind and can see fine. I haven’t been able to find anything similar. And it’s certainly not contagious nobody else has been sick or gotten it. I’m wonder if it could’ve been a stroke idk I know when humans have strokes sometimes half of our faces sag idk if it’s the same in chickens, or maybe she’s just old?? Any help would be soo greatly appreciated. Here’s some pics! Thank you again in advance!!

Whow, that is really weird. The eye looks perfectly normal with the exception of the droopy lower eyelid. If I look closer though, is that lower inner eyelid swollen? It doesn't look red but at some angles it looks like it is a bit on the 'poofy' side. If it is, could it be pulling the lower outer lid down?

She's a beautiful girl. A testimony to good, loving care.

Right?! Super weird! We took another look and it doesn’t seem swollen it’s just like the entire right side is dropping/ sagging including the skin under her eye. Here’s these pics, this first one sorta shows her other eye and shows that it’s not saggy.. I’ll try taking a pic of the other side tomorrow.
And Thank you so much we definitely make sure to give them lots of love & care!

Really interesting. I did a search for sagging eyelids in chickens and one of the hits was for a thread here on BYC. You might want to give it a look.

Just to cover bases you might want to treat her as if she has an injury or infection. You can put regular antibiotic ointment in her eye. Just rub a small pea sized glob over the eyelid. She will close her eye when you do it and that is okay. The ointment will melt into the eyelid. Make sure and use original ointment and not ointment with pain relief.

I wondered out loud if chickens have strokes...I dunno the answer to that one. Seems as though if she had done that she would loose mobility on that side of her body.
