I have read various articles which recommend using a dropping area. Then you raise it and scoop out the droppings. Apparently it makes for easier clean up.

My question is do you just build the droppings bin under the roosts only? Is that where they tend to poop the most?

Yes, most people just have them under the roosts. You can either have a container to catch the droppings which is emptied as required, often with a screen over it to keep the chickens out, or an elevated board under the roost which can be scraped, often daily.

This helps the litter last longer, keeps the ammonia and smell down, and gives you concentrated nitrogen to go on your compost heap.
