The smoke is very dangerous to humans. You need to keep your windows shut, any A/C or venting to the outside closed and when you must go out wear a particulate mask that will protect you. Nothing really you can do for the animals, but be sure to protect yourself. We wore masks outdoors for two weeks! I saw no adverse affects on the chickens, even though they have pretty sensitive respiratory systems! You may want to have a animal rescue location mapped out ahead of time, so if worse comes to worse you know where to go with them! I wish you only the best! :fl

This is our smoke at 2pm one day.

Oh my gosh! I’m sorry!

So we had a really hot day on Tuesday. It got over 43 degrees celsius (109 fahrenheit). I had to spray the birds with water several times. Most of them did okay, sadly we lost one bird; one of the gouldian finches :(

Can't wait 'till summer's over, it just gets too hot and with water restrictions, you're limited with water.

I'm sorry to hear you lost a bird. The heat is a big problem. It gets 100 to 112 degrees Fahrenheit here every summer. Last year I lost a hen. She just couldn't tolerate the heat. She would stand in cold water for hours, but after a few days she died. I hope and pray that you loose no more! Yes, it must be tough with water restrictions, I don't have that problem here, we have our own well. I'm just hoping the fires will be contained, your weather will cool and your birds will be happier, and you as well! Hang in there! :hugs

Well, we have another hot one today. It's going to get up to 45 degrees celsius (113 fahrenheit). We're more prepared this time. We've brought our small parrots and finches inside in cages and we've moved our king quail cages into our garage. All the other birds have wet linen on their aviaries and I've wet the ground of the aviaries. Hopefully we won't loose anyone this time.

It actually got up to 47 degrees celsius (116.6 fahrenheit). Everyone is okay at the moment, one chicken overheated a little but seems alright now. After this we're supposed to get cooler weather for the next while.

You are smart and took all the measures to protect your birds that you could. I'm hoping that it really does cool down and you have time to relax. Feathers are the warmest covering (warmer than any fur) and birds have the hardest time with heat that any other animal. Wishing you all the best, you are doing a great job of managing what you can! :hugs

Thank you so much!

Ive got a bunch of cheap plastic storage containers with bedding already in them stacked in my garage, along with stakes and a temporary fence, 10L jugs and a bag of food. that way if I fire comes we can stuff them all into our car and take them somewhere to survive.
