Drought effects in Texas

i would think if we can have huge pipelines for oil - some one should be able to figure out a way to pipe water from flood areas to drought - but no money in that i guess

it's so sad to watch these areas dealing with floods - when so many others could use the water

There really should not be a water restriction but you would know how much water you use for your garden. Watering grass, nope, not allowed in most cases. Grass will go dormant and re seed itself when the conditions are just right. Having green grass in an area that had been desert or naturally arid looks "unnatural". Like those golf courses in the middle of the desert in NV LOL!

They haven't given us any water restrictions yet, but I'm sure they will eventually. I'm watering the grass only once or twice a week though. We threw some bermuda grass seed in our yard this year and it does really well in the heat and not being watered daily. I water our garden every evening though but its not very big. We have alot of people in our neighborhood that act like they're going for the yard of the month or something. They water their grass every day, all day...and most of the water just runs off into the street. I know these people are working hard to keep their grass green but I think its a waste.

I agree, it would lessen the pains of losing homes and businesses if they can divert the floods to areas needing water.

X2 I thought about the pipeline idea too since it seems half of the country is flooded and the other half hasn't had rain in months.

Me too, its a real waste of precious water to get green lawn. There are creative ways you can pretty up the desert by planting flowers in pots scattered here and there with some shepherd hooks or posts with hangers. Or lovely plants that LOVE the heat and lack of water!

I am guilty though of bringing the water hose behind our house and watering some of the oak trees in the woods...

I also have a huge bowl of water back there for all the little forest animals

seems to me you're being pretty responsible. I don't understand the perfect manicured lawn thing when it is a waste and a strain on resources. i like native grasses and think they make prettier lawns anyway

what are you growing in your garden?

I know its only a TV show but I was watching a show on the Discovery Channel they were talking about when the population of earth is to high that we can no longer sustain ourselves.

They were predicting a mass migration north to states and provinces that border the great lakes because all other fresh water sources have dried up

I can see it already happening.. with livestock.. they are shipping them north to greener pastures...

My garden isn't very big at all...and its my first year with one so its still a learning process. Our broccoli, lettuce, radishes and carrots did good earlier in the spring, but I pulled all of them up a couple months ago. They just started trying to seed when it got really warm. I have about 20 onions that are drying/curing out on the back porch right now, those were extremely easy. And as of now all I have in the garden are tomatoes, eggplant and peppers. The eggplant is doing really well in the heat. I think so far I've picked about 10 eggplants off of it and I have 3 that are almost ready. Must be all the chicken poo fertilizer LOL.
