Drought effects in Texas

My grandma sold all her cattle this year. First time, in my lifetime, that she has had no cattle. She said they'd eaten all she had and that she was having to buy all their feed - it got where it wasn't worth it to her. Now, she is in her 80's and doing this alone, so her desire to hang on to the herd was on the low end. 2 other ranchers I spoke with this week were selling off their livestock as well.

I dont know how farmers are doing it. My 2 small gardens are barely hanging on. We water them daily (with a hose) but the heat is just doing a number on the plants. I'm not sure that Austin is on a water restriction, but we are not watering our yard. Just the fruit trees and garden. I do see some neighbors (including the gentleman across the street from me) who use their sprinkler system every morning. Drives me batty. I was driving downtown earlier this week and saw a several business with fountains running. Can you believe the nerve of them? Sure water comes out of the faucet when you turn it on...but who are you taking it from?

On a positive note we had a small shower this morning.

i always thought that if you water the grass - it just makes it grow so i have to mow it more lol- i always hope that my neighbors sprinkler wont hit my grass lol

i have a decent front yard - no big bare spots - and enough trees to shelter it that it actually has some green...

when i first started my garden this spring - i kept turning the sprinkler on it and forgetting - would come home to a swamp - but my garden is doing great now in the heat - hoping maybe it got a good root system at the beginning

We have seen a some deer in the woods and a doe with twins comes to our back fence every morning. I mainly have the water out for them. Hopefully both fawns make it, but I know its not looking good for them

. I'm probaby just giving water to a bunch of chicken killing raccoons and possums! haha

You have to weigh the good and bad with providing water for the animals. They will meet their end eventually.

Just went on Accuweather and looks like Houston is getting the big one and the coastal areas east of Houston. Sometimes those kind of storms would either blow right on thru (like ours) and no rain or it poured.
