Drought has dried up all my grass! What are you feeding?

I've been watering like crazy as well and I only have 8 geese and a 1/2 acre yard so it's good so far. What I do when they don't get to free-range is put grass hay like I feed the horses in a hay net and hang it so they can't get caught in it but so they can reach it. They have a ball and they eat much better then if I just put it on the ground for them. I'm really worried about rising feed costs as well.

Talking about supplementing with greens, one day I was at the grocery store and the produce guy was taking all the older greens and putting them into large plastic can, I said boy would my chickens/ ducks/ goose love those. He said we cannot give or sell old produce, they just throw it away. What a shame. and so wasteful.

I have tried too. The other day I saw them pulling those outside leaves off heads of cabbage, and asked again. They said the lady in the deli takes them all home. I guess you have to work there. :(

Probably so ,my dh says if they gave the old produce away and some one got sick they would probably be sued.

I sprout alfalfa. It's kinda expensive, but it really helps keep the yolks orange. I did this all last winter.

I'm going to sprout oats and wheat when I buy a 50# bag.:). This will help.

I've never fed cabbage before but put whole heads in each day pen the other day and they were mowed down to an apple size by PM chores.
I left them whole to give them something to chew on. I put them in a high sided black rubber horse feed tubs so they didn't just roll it around in the dirt.
They go nuts over watermelon eating it rind and all. Not much nutritional value I suppose but they love it.
I also have some new weed grass growing up thru the mulch in my veggie garden so I've been picking that and giving it to them but its not in large amounts
so it more like a little green snack.
