Drought has dried up all my grass! What are you feeding?

Vicki, have you thought about field peas?

I know some people are using peas for protein instead of soy.
Been meaning to look into that.
I don't know why it wouldn't be good for your geese, especially when the leaves/peas/pods are young and tender
and have the highest nut. value. Do you grow them?

Talking about supplementing with greens, one day I was at the grocery store and the produce guy was taking all the older greens and putting them into large plastic can, I said boy would my chickens/ ducks/ goose love those. He said we cannot give or sell old produce, they just throw it away. What a shame. and so wasteful.

We are actually going to try them as a winter crop this year to see how they do. I figure I can seed the pasture the county flooded when they closed the locks north of us. We have brown millet growing now that is doing very well. Also establishing bamboo and once it takes off they can go at it as much as they want.

Watermelon, Cantaloup, and pumpkin all grow well here too, between the geese and goats everything from them gets eaten.

Have you gotten any of the rain recently? I live in Northern Indiana and we had 4.5 inches of rain last week and another 3/4 of an inch today. We even have more rain in the forcast. My yard is actually turning green. The pasture that I planted is now growing well. I pray that the rain heads your way as well. The rain may be too late for many of the crops, but hopefully the hay will grow enough to not affect the price too much.

You might consider talking to a manager at the grocery store. My wife would say don't take a no from a person who can't give you a yes. In other words the produce person may not have authority to say yes but a manager might. Just a thought.

Hey Flockman we come down to Shipshewana a couple times a year.

We did get a good soaker last week but not enough to green things up yet.
Still dry for the most part and the grass is dormant.
I think I will look into getting dated produce.
I know they sell it cheap at the local big grocery store.

ive started growing meadow brome .. fast recovery can survive on 14 inches rain per year good for my more than 7 thousand foot altitude ,

I found barley grass seed I am just soaking it today, look at fodder solutions in google, will let you know how it grows , supposedly it takes six days to be ready. they love the wheat grass I need to find more trays to grow it in though.

I've got dryland pasture seed ready to go. We haven't been in drought conditions at this point and have our own well along with a municipal water system so I have grass for them still.

I've been feeding purina gamebird flight conditioner and oats along with grass.

ETA: I bought feed on Friday and it has gone up almost a dollar a bag already for wholesale prices.
