Drunk raccoon

A "drunk" raccoon during the day usually means a sick raccoon. I didn't read the whole thread but if you can't shoot it then poison it. If you can't do that then you need to call animal control.
We're in the country so if its in the yard its fair game. We keep a .410 next to the back door, 357 in the kitchen and a 1200fps pellet gun in the coop. I've had to use all 3 at one time or another.
Good luck
Chris

.22 CB is a really short .22 cartridge - slower than most modern pellet guns, but a much heavier bullet. I think they run around 500fps. Sounds like a cap gun. Quieter than a high-velocity pellet gun.

Anything that keeps in the under 1100fps will be much quieter than a standard 22LR as long as you shoot from a long barrel. A pistol will still have burning powder when the bullet exits, making it louder.

I did a quick google search and found a great video on .22 subsonic rounds -
Too bad they didn't put a dB meter in the video.

Man o man that sounds good. Back to the old single shot .22. I was raised shooting squirrels with single shot. That's exactly what taught me to shoot to begin with.

Yah, but a 22 probably won't help if a bear wanders by... But between them going into hibernation right now and me not even really having chickens yet (just chicken plans and chicken dreams) I guess I don't have much of a problem. The big guns can stay in their cases for a while.

The bears never bugged us much when we were there, but I didn't have animals beyond my dog. We had a Grizzly camp out in our backyard from time to time, grazing on the berries. We just stayed inside and let her move along.

A .22 is fine in bear country, as long as you're not alone (aim for your buddy's kneecap so you won't be the slowest).

Actually, I heard that the way to use a 357 pistol to protect yourself from a bear is to shave the gun sights off the end so it doesn't hurt so much when.... never mind, family forum....

We've seen bear scat, but no bear near the house yet. Moose in the yard, sometimes, and an occasional fox wandering through.

Just seeing this thread and tried to quickly skim all the posts before responding - may not have caught everything but have to get back to work here in a sec. Raccoons are typically nocturnal yes, but more and more they have been known to come out in the daytime for a bit looking for food. They tend to be tipsy and zombie like during the day (I am not saying there aren't exceptions!). Most of the time, rabies is not at play.

Imagine my surprise one day to look out the window and see a raccoon calming meandering right past my hen Ellie, a foot away at most, but completely oblivious. I dashed out there so fast only to see her chasing the raccoon! "Ellie, that's a predator!". She ignored me and the raccoon ignored her and left. Loopy as can be in the daytime, that raccoon...

Because of irresponsible neighbors letting their dogs run loose, my poor birds are sadly locked up most of the time anymore but even if they weren't, I wouldn't myself worry about daytime raccoons. My birds are locked up tight at night so I don't worry about raccoons then either. Nobody gets hurt, not pred, not prey.

Very funny - I heard a variation the first time I stepped to fly in Alaska and was checking out my 9mm, the life support Sergeant who grew up in Canada told me, "I did the 'Alaska bear mod' on your weapon, sir."

"What's the bear mod?"

"I filed off the front sight and put a tube of vaseline in your holster so when..."
