Dubbing OEG combs/ wattles?

Quote:
probably not.

if you go by that philosophy, than why spay or neuter? geld? caponize? etc..what most dont realize or refuse to recognize is these birds have a much higher threshold for pain than what humans give them credit for. we can not give animals, esp. poultry, fowl, human feelings and reasonings to the degree that humans have them..

dubbing, docking, ear cropping, dew claw removal, etc,,,, is mainly for looks, but it originated and still does for some circumstances have a reason for the good of the animal.

Rabbit...spaying and neutering are for health reasons. They live longer and are healthier. As I say, these alterations for looks only don't make sense to me. Being in the medical profession, I do know that many animals do not show signs of pain even when they are suffering terribly. They just go and hide and suffer in silence. Again...what is the point, except for looks??? I guess my question is why do we alter for looks???? We as humans are always wanting to alter our look with plastic surgery. It's the same thing to me. Thanks for your input.

its all in the eye of the beholder. i personally like the looks of croping , dubbing, etc. and i practice it. im superficial like that. BUT. i also see the benefits (health benefits) that occasionally arise according to circumstances that croping and dubbing hold.

but lets be realistic to. from a game bird standpoint. he isnt a gamecock whether standard or bantam, w/o a good trim job. the old saying that the suit makes the man....is very correct. looks HELPS make something what it truly is. and im a man that likes to dress in a suit and tie. total transformation, it is.

just like a doberman. ever seen one that isnt cropped? looks silly. has nothing of its regal "devil dog" glory. looks nothing more than a black and tan hound. and not even that good. appearance means every thing is some instances. and thats of course contingent on the beholders tastes. some like the clean look. some like a long hair hippy look.

by the way. if you do some extensive homework. you'll fine spaying and neutering isnt all that the vets and animal righteous types like to mislead the masses into believing. once again. it falls under your own reasoning of changing nature.

things I do not agree with I do not do. Those who chose to do things I do not agree with are free to do them with out my interference. some folks think having chickens is wrong it all a matter of what someone believes I believe in not bothering other folks .I kina wish most practiced this

Hi Apro. Piercing is done by the person having it done. It's THEIR choice. Our animals have no say. Again, the question is why or how we deem something the standard? And Rabbit, I could not agree more, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, BUT again why does beauty mean "altering" ones looks?????? Again. Thanks for your opinions. I am always open to new views and I would LOVE to read what research you have anti neuter/spay. Thanks!

modifying is all about looks... i was a professional body piercer since the age of 16... i have done some crazy stuff to people from slicing their tongue in half to cutting chunks of ears off of other people... the same with plastic surgery... no one is ever content with their looks of anything... be it their dog, cat, rooster, shoes... whatever... there's nothing anyone can do it, if a couple of people do it, so be it... we have to be tolerant to what other people decide to do in their lives... even if it's ruining their lives... so what, it's not harming you or your loved ones...

anyways... here's my thread when i was going to dub henry the rooster...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=5122827

i have pictures and i had the mods take out the negative comments and stone throwers.... but it turned into a huge debate and it was a lot of fun, but it's been argued for years now... not one person's opinion on a webforum matters so much to make a difference if i'm going to dub or not... as a matter of fact, i have to dub 7 roosters pretty soon...

also, here's a video i made when i dubbed henry...

thx...

edit: i took out some quotes i accidentally made...

thanks for the link to your thread. first time dubbing is daunting, but after a few under your belt. its not bad at all. when we were dubbing hundreds every yr. we would work as teams. one holding, one cutting. but now that i only have a few. i wrap them up in a towel. on the OEGB its ok to leave extra skin around the lobes . but on a standard game. tighter the better.

best time to dub is tween 6-9 months of age. you can do it older. its harder on the more fragile OEGB. but the standard games can take it at any age.

seriously though. what looks better on a game rooster?

or when one is trimmed up

leaving a comb, wattles, lobes on a game rooster really cheapens his appearance. IMO

i started to dub by myself... i just wrap them in a cold towel, and lay him on his side... it is a million times better for me... in the video, i felt like jose was in the way... but that was my first dub... my second and all the other dubs i've been doing have been doing solo runs... very easy, and calming on the birds... i also use flour or cornstarch... but they don't bleed as much usually...

I am all for modifying your own body. I guess your answer, answered my question to a point. I have friends with piercing. I am NOT against alterations or personal freedom AT ALL. I guess my point is a group of people come together and create a "standard". Then everyone is expected to follow it. So where does the personal expression come in??? Like the AKC...breeds have to adhere to a certain "standard" they created to be considered "the norm".

I guess I wonder why we have to create pain to be considered "normal". Again, a person can choose for themselves...but animals, children can't. Thanks for your view. I do agree that people have the choice to dub/not dub. My thought process is why we standadrize for competition.

Its all a matter of choise and standards of the particular bread ! For example, American Games look more fierce and proud after they are dubbed, something wich enhances their overall look wich goes very well with their as well, fierce and proud natural personality ! Other people chose to dubb for many other reasons like for example preventing constant injuries to the comb of a bird that may be constantly atempting to reach for grass over the coops chicken wire line or to prevent deseases transfered by mosquitoes. The reasons could be many. It is true that some breads look gorgeous with theire combs, then again, it is a matter of personal taste and oppinion. At the end the right and freedom of choice of wether you dubb your chicken or not is yours, just make shure that dubbing is exactly what you want to do; cocks don't grow new combs back !
