D'uccle Thread

Woo! Just found a great thread which included a sex comparison photo at three weeks and I'm bouncing up and down on the couch because according to that I have two pullets and won't have the heartbreak of either being a roo that I have to cull! Yaaaay!!!
I cant usualy tell by color at 3 weeks.... but about a month you can see t he roos get a bit bigger comb and stand a little more upright, and I have noticed have a little more black around their eyes.. and the hens have a bigger beard, and less comb and are a little more brown than black.

but you really cant tell until one of them starts to get the pointed feathers, and you can check down under the ckick feathers, in the saddle and neck area for "pointy" feathers.... those are boys LOL

Here's some updated photos of my pullets. They are now about 5 weeks old. I feel confident that both are pullets but feel free to tell me otherwise if you think I'm wrong. Criticism and advice would be handy since I would like to show them if they are worth it.

I agree...... the color looks fine for this age, they do look like pullets....
the only thing I see at this point is no beards... and they should be starting to get beards.
Give them a bit more time and see if they have a muff or not.... If htey are going to be breeding or show quality, th ey will have the beard LONE before a fist moult.... ours are only 4 months old and they have full beards already.

One is getting a beard, the other is not, so she is a booted not a duccle.

correct....and for a breeding program I would not keep anything without a strong beard and small wattles...
Agreed. I haven't decided if I will continue breeding duccles or booteds at all. I was in love with my roo but my neighbors sent me "anonymous" threats against him so he had to go. I was pretty heartbroken about that. These two were all I managed to hatch out before he went, so I'm attached to them regardless of their show potential, but it would be nice if one was worth taking to a show.

I have considered going to the Ohio National show to attempt to buy quality golden necked d'Uccles. (After searching all year with no luck.) However, I have never been to this show. Has anyone been there that could give me an idea about how many d'Uccles typically show up, and if there is generally a good selection for sale? It is quite a drive for me, and it would be a bit silly to go that far to find just a few d'Uccles, and no real sale options. Thanks.

I have never been there before, but will be going this year. Showing and of course buying! Good luck finding your D'uccles
