Haha duh! sorry i am not with it today and my week has been way to busy when im not at work. The chicks feet/legs are the right color i will have to get a picture of the chick as he has some crazy colors...but no foot fluff.
We have had some leg injuries in my past flocks and they still laid...they did not nest or go broody but they would just stand in the box and an egg would fall out so to speak. So yes she will likely lay again.
oh she tries to perch and just falls off but so badly wanted to sleep in a nest last night with the broodies i helped her in.its less than a foot off the ground. --did your hens ever successfully mate after, were eggs ever fertile or did you ever check?
Beautiful bird. I hate to lose them that way. For my reference, is that SOP? If so, I am way off. If I ever decided to start serious breeding I would have to start over. I think I'm just going to be happy with what these girls hatch and get more serious with my BCMs
i never checked for fertility but i would think they would still be able to...since the rooster you know basically just hops on them, crouching down or laying is not mandatory for breeding from what ive seen in my chickens. Probly just depends on the hen and roo in question.
Me too, and she was one of the breeding-birds, now I just have a trio.
I can't free range where I live unless I'm home. Out in the woods, too many critters. I've lost them to fox, hawk, raccoon, and opossum. It took me two years to learn the hard way that I should have built my pens the way I read about. My wife came home from work one day to find a hawk finishing up one of my original Orpingtons. I feel for you losing such a beautiful breeder. Do you have any of her offspring coming up?
