Ha! ONLY if I manage to successfully AI the hen! He is less than 1/2 her size so I can't see him ever successfully breeding her. I keep watching the YouTube AI video and trying to psyche myself up for this. I have pipettes ordered and plan to make my first attempt as soon as they arrive. Wish me luck - I think I'm going to need it! Especially since I have no clue what I am doing really. I am having fun though, and that's the point right?

Lori

Just wanted to let you know, we have started putting eggs from Midas' girls in the bator! Here's to hoping for some more GN babies!

Chick on the hill, this man Karl Rau is a known prize bird enthusiast that has since retired, but did leave this article online for the bunch of us to learn from. We have one man in the club that successfully collects semen etc with small medicine cups. Mind you, I have no idea but I know Mike Rowe has had a time learning it! LOL (dirty jobs)

here is the link, I hope it helps you out: http://www.cochinbantams.com/a__insemination.htm

Have a great day and I wanna rooster.........

I know, I'm crazy, but I do. I'd love to have a nice looker to go with my gals. (mind you, we have 5 roosters of 2 different breeds at this time and none to introduce to my MF gals!!!)

Thanks for the link. Mr. Rau certainly makes it sound simple. I am at least encouraged by the fact that he says it may take a few attempts to get it right. I have tried once without success but after reading this I will make a few changes and try again.

Well, one of our club members does it and its quite comical (sad to say) how he puts it when he begins with a new cockerel. He gets snatched from his cage, humiliated, tossed back into the cage feeling violated. Then the next day, yells at being snatched, still hasn't figured out what happened, tossed back in the cage wondering. The 3rd day, knows the man is coming for him, stands his ground, just goes with what just occurred , tossed back in the cage feeling quite nice. The 4th day, eh, what ever, do you have a treat?

Its humorous but a fact of life, so hang in there, I have never once tried it but its a interesting subject. Good luck on that one and I"m so glad that I could help! To bad we couldn't learn to ship frozen specimens in the mail, then we wouldn't have to work around poor shipping of eggs or not using our own hens in some cases. Ok, enough of my mind wandering, that is beyond my control!

Our D'Uccle boy use to mount the Faverolle Hens when they were mixed together. I know that some of the eggs were fertile as he was the only roo in with the girls. so they must have been able to meet some how.

And I'm glad the little stinker is behaving for you!!

About size issues for breeding: We had a silkie roo that used to jump on the buff orps from a ramp. The hen that cooperated had fertile eggs...
Also, he fertilized both EE hens as well. Only problem I had was that the eggs failed during incubation, and I never got one to hatch. I suspect that it had something to do with the size of the chick vs the egg size? Not sure. I was very new to it all back then. But I successfully hatched shipped eggs that were incubated with my homegrown EExsilkie crosses, so it had to have been genetic or size issues.

I am very happy because I met a guy at a party who's 8-year old daughter wants silkies. I will have much more room for d'Uccles if I can move out the 5 silkie babies!!

Just a note... A few months ago my Silkie roo mated with my Buff Orpington hen and they incubated just fine. I now have a couple of beautiful chicks as the result!!!

I was watching Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe the other day and they were AIing turkeys .. I would imagine it would be similar .. LOL. I guess I didn't realize that that is how they breed turkeys in those big operations.. it's very... um ... mechanical. Collect, colllect, collect from all the toms ... then go over to the hen house and AI AI AI ... Just think, that is someone's fulltime job ..
