I agree. I think your baby is blue.
I also feel like a dolt; I kept the darkest 'lavender' pullet because she was molting and looked crummy when the show was going on in September. Now that she's fully feathered, when compared to the babies, she's looking blue as well.
I'm confused though, because my lav roo over lav hens threw all lavs. If one hen was actually blue, would she still throw lav babes with a lav roo?
And what would a white roo over a blue hen throw? I guess that would be the 'acid test' if there's a difference between what a lav or what a blue would throw....
On a totally unrelated note: I'm going to HAVE to enter the show January 15th. It's a d'Uccle special meet, so I have to enter as many birds as I can.
And I have to read up on rules. Tennessee's son hatched in July. I want to enter him as a cockeral, but since by then he'll be 'last year's bird' I may have to enter him as a cock. I've never had a show so early in the year before....
Ok, well I guess it's confirmed then, she's blue
LOL.....It's kinda neat we're coming up with some of the same colors living in 2 seperate states and with 2 seperate programs. Will be interesting to see what turns up with both since we have different genetics (Which is a Blessing in disguise, really).
As far as your blu pullet goes, that gives you the 1st chance to see what the cross will produce, but I'm guessing (w/o chik calculatr) you'll get blue from lav x blu breeding, possibly blacks which would be most excellent. As far as the WHITE goes, it will depend on if he's a dom white or rec white and what genes he has behind him. White can mask and block colors...it takes away from or covers "hiden" genetics. I suspect white over blue will produce either dirty/smutty/mottled whites (which is fine) or diluted blues w/rec wht gene, but dont hold me to that.
Now on the other hand, which ever way you go, or maybe do both, you will eventually be able to use those chicks from both the lavy and white breedings to breed together as the lav over blue is a 'split'. If it were ME, I'd use those "white blockers" in your program for other colors as well, ie GN's, creams-Lemons. Keep your best birds from both, breed them together and you'll be amazed I'm sure. Good luck at the show, it sure seems early and COLD, but thumbs up and kick some tailfeathers! What does TennJr look like? I dont guess I've seen him yet Lori.
PS: If anyone has any different knowlege on the crosses I'm proposing (genetics) then please step in and correct me. Take care, will be back a bit later on to catch up.
