D'uccle Thread

Usually I'm the one trailing behind on bird cooperation! So far I've parted with 11 of the D' chicks pq and still have 10 left. I'm in hopes to build up a flock, bring in a new cockerel and see what next year comes up with. So far I'm ok with how the chicks look but the incubator gave me fluctuation/humidity issues and a number of birds had the outside toe fold under and they were walking on them. So they were shipped out and see how this next batch does once the hens go broody just to make sure its not a inbreeding issue.
But, they are beautiful and unless you picked them up, you would never be able see that they had a "missing" toe.
Hope your all doing well, and yippie on sunshine, soon you will rarely see a post due to super weather and we can finally get out and accomplish something (I say a shop vac with open windows and fans to direct the chick dust!!!!!)

Thanks Doug! Nice to know I'm not alone!!

I'm still a hatching fool, though. Between the d'Uccle lav splits, the silkies/showgirls, and some silkie/showgirl eggs I bought, I have about 60 chicks right now

But the pq silkies will go to a new home this weekend, as will the culls from the lav split babes. By this time next week I will have a more manageable # again....

Hey, has anyone on here ever order d'Uccles from Purely Poultry before?

So please rate these three for me, as best you can from these crappy photos:

See anything show quality? I don't have toes photos *yet*, but otherwise what do you think? I'm considering taking them to the bantam show here in AL this in April.
Any tips or advice is helpful. Thanks in advance!

Your Mille Hen is definately the one to go with taking to the show, she is very nice. Clean her up well, wash her feet good a day or two before the show and get her off the ground.

Two things you will have to worry with now and in the future. Those foot feathers I see alot of broken feathers on her feet. - that will probably get you points docked.

# 2 - definately trim her beak and check her toenails and trim them down as needed.

I would take the millie hen and the goldneck cockerel. I can't tell how good the gn's middle toe feathering is, but he has a nice stance and there aren't a lot of goldnecks in most shows anyway. Might as well see how he does.

Sort of lost Lizzie last night. She disappeared after locking them in for the night. Looked in all the nests, inside the feeder, in all the corners, even on the big extension cord that goes across the coop about six feet up. No Lizzie. DH came down with a flashlight to help look for her. We were peering into every corner when I accidentally flashed the light across the ceiling. There she was, up on the divider wall that separates the storage area from the actual coop area, about 9' up, perched on the wall happy as a lark. Had to get a step ladder to get her down. That one is a real character!

My Mille Pumpkin and my mixed colored d'uccle hen Wiley are the best fliers and LOVE to get on top of my sheds. I've found Pumpkin in the tree before when they're out free ranging. Though that chicken is an odd duck, her favorite place to lay eggs? In the workshop / big shed on the main table by the saw and grinder, lol no kidding. apparently she wants some tough chicks

Think she wants to go broody away from everyone else, I've caught her just sitting there after I took her egg.

I am now making sure to keep the shed closed when they free range, so she will stop laying in there. We had to do a easter egg hunt early, looking for eggs in there when I realized she was using the shed for her nest box.
