D'uccle Thread

I lock mine down later today after I come home from work. I will candle and let you know Teddi how things are going.

(Kind of off subject so forgive me)

Gosh you guys, your making me so eggcited! I don't care what color, shape, size or how many toes are feathered, they are such cool birds. Don't get me wrong, I love my other birds equally, but these guys are such talkers and so personable. I just let the little ones out so they can explore the area before they become accustomed to just the kennel. I like having them used to feet, movement and the cats. I won't trust my cats cause they're cats, but so far in the history of chicks and these cats, these chicks can walk up, pull hair and the cat might get up and walk off or roll over. (like I said, so far so good)

These chicks are developing well, I have noticed that a few have to few patches of feathers on their middle toes. I hope its a now thing as they had down on both outside toes. The broodie hen Ruthie only had the 1 chick, one died pipped and others she got off from and I missed being able to saving them. The one that pipped and others were like in shrink wrap. I assumed that it was a incubator issue, not a moist skinned hen! I welcome your opinion. But Ruthie is so proud of her little spoiled brat, omg, he hops over her, comes out through every feather on her body. But its so awesome to watch life unfold naturally.

Oh, btw Cynthia, I love the sayings you have, wow! As we have discussed a 101 times, chickens do not catch colds. And on another note, it kinda drives me nuts that people claim for a cure when its simply just gone dormant again. Sufferin succotash!

Also the Chickens are a hobby, not a religion!

On saying I have made on a "shingle" "Unattended Children will be given sugar and a free rooster" , we sorta copied it from a sign at a local coffee shop "Unattended children will be given caffeine and a free kitten" in which I have laughed over for months!

Spook, I have seen signs like that, and "Unattended Children will be given copious amounts of sugar and a free puppy" I often tell people who come over my house to buy birds or whatever to watch their kids and if they can't watch their youngins that I was sending something living and breathing home with them be it cat, dog, chicken, or snake. lol

Petstore when I was a kid had a sign that read in colorful letters "Kids who can't behave will be hogtied and gagged and will be put in time out in the snake room until their parents collect them"

I "lost" another D'Uccle tonight! Went in the coop to check on them and found Beau and Lizzie perched on the back of the nests, but no JoBeth! I couldn't find her anywhere, grabbed a flashlight and started looking all over. Found her way up high on a ledge. I could barely reach her, but she stepped onto my hand and I put all three of the little deviants on the roost where they belong.

And you are bringing the deviants to me so they can give me heart attacks? Yay!

I have had many of these frantic flashlight searches in the middle of the night. I'm sure my neighbors get a good laugh. It's just because they're little and I don't want the owls to get them! I had a rooster one time flew out of the fenced run area and when I found him he was perching on the edge of my son's sandbox on our patio near the back door. Guess he figured I'd see him on my way in or out. Yes, they are deviant/Houdini escape artists!

I got 4 D'uccles out of an assorted bantam bin at the feedstore. I had no clue what they were, I thought they were cochins. I only found out for sure what they were due to the photos on this thread. I love to sit and watch the little ones and I have observed that these little D'uccles are the clowns of the brooder. They are the first to inspect things, the first to do the "joyful flappy dance" and get the rest started in the fun. I am totally smitten with their personalities. One is growing very blue feathers. They are my favorites!
