D'uccle Thread

Chickie'sMoma :

wow! that does sound like a good deal! are they all adults, chicks, or young enough to tell their sexes?

7 week olds and 7 teenagers (about 9 weeks)

I have 5 mille fleur - 3 pullets 2 cockerals and 2 mille/mottled mix pullets.

great deal - I only asked for a trio of the teenagers! I got 2 trios + an extra girl!

It's very difficult to advise you with only a verbal description. It's hard enough from pictures, but by just describing them it makes it just a shot in the dark.
As far as when they complete their color, my experience has been that they reach their true color by about 1 yr old or maybe just a little bit older. Hens are a little different and seem to continue to change with each molt for a couple of years. This may be different with different lines also
If you can post some pictures it would help us to advise you better with your choice.

We picked one up from Theron at Chicken Stock- post on the MI thread asking. I think a few other people were posting some for sale recently.
I just had 9 eggs shipped in with a few silkie eggs..... so in a couple weekes I might!!!

I'm up to 7 myself.

1 mille fleur hen 2 years old ( raised 1 baby!)
2 black mottled hens 10 weeks
2 porcelain hens 6 weeks and 14 weeks
1 self blue roo roo 16 weeks

I had my first blue mottled hatch today! 1 day

I think only the blue, blue mottled, and the porcelain are show quality. My roo roo is young, like 16 weeks and is dirty. His tail feathers are all crinkled. he needs a good bath and grooming, as well as time to grow in tail feather before he can show.

Is there anyone in the Sounthern Ohio/Northern Kentucky area that has SQ, mille fleur, mottle(blue or black), Porcelain, or White D'uccle?

I would love to get some eggs in the fall or winter or maybe even meet up for young chicks(i would prefer chicks).

I love the breed and am getting to spend more time with my pair since they are living in the house right now. They are normally terrified of people and of getting touched but after only being in 4 days and getting pet maybe for a few minutes on 3 of those days they arent running or scared at all. I think why they are so scared is because we didnt raise them and they werent handled much at the previous owners house. I never knew how sweet and gentle they could be. I am falling in love with them more and more everyday.

Thanks, Lisa

My first D'uccle chicks have hatched!!!! I purchased a dozen eggs but only four hatched but I'm very happy with the four because I have had so many bad storms and the electric has gone out several times for hours at a time that I am thankfull for the four. I wanted to post pictures because they are all different colors and was hoping someone can tell me what colors they are. They are only 1 and 2 days old.

The first picture is one I named Theodore because he/she reminds me of the third chipmunk "Theordore". When I took the pictures is when I noticed it only had one eye open so I used a warm, wet cloth and dried to clean it up hoping it was only dried on juk from hatching but it didn't help. Plus I didn't want to be to aggressive at trying to open the eye. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He/she is the chick in the middle of the picture.

This little chick looks like "all dressed up but no where to go".

This is the friendlest chick of the group. The camera washed his color out but he's greyish. It's the chick in the middle of the picture.

This was the first to hatch and seems to be the first at everything. It's the chick in the middle of the picture.

Well, it looks to me like you've got a real rainbow of colors. I would say your first chick, with the closed eye is a Mille Fleur, the second one is a Black Mottled, the third - I think is a self blue or Lavender and the last one probably a Porcelain.
As far as the eye is concerned, I don't know. If you can tell whether or not it is crusted shut or looks actually "grown" shut that would make a difference in how you proceed. If it's grown shut, you may just have to accept that it has one eye, if it looks crusted, what I would do is get some ophthalmic ointment and a Q-tip and gently apply the ointment every few hours. I'd try to wipe it off using a clean Q-tip before I re-applied. I wouldn't get medicated ointment by the way, I'd just get the kind of stuff that adds moisture.
They're adorable.

Thanks Lilcrow for your help with the colors and thank you for your help with the little one with the closed eye. When I was trying to work on it last night, I thought I saw the pupil underneath the yukky, dried stuff. I will take your advise and take a better look and go from there. I think they are soooo cute tooo!!!
