I can usually tell by 2 weeks, there boys combs start to grow.

you can sex them anywheres from 2-10 weeks via comb. maybe around 6-7 weeks by color on some verities such as golden neck and mille fleur (i had a cockerel that didn't show he was a cockerel by his comb till he was 10 weeks old

up till then i thought pullet but after going back and looking at his pics i should have known he was a cockerel by his coloring. he is a mille fleur)

I've come seeking assistance please. There are so many different looking chicks that all have the same name of "Mille Fleur". Can someone please explain to me what all the other tags are IE: d'uccle, d'anvers, millie, golden neck, etc?? Is there somewhere I can see what each and every chick is supposed to look like according to which variety they are? I've been enjoying this thread immensely, but 600+ pages is a lot to go through to find this. lol

mille fleur is a color/pattern variety and not a breed like d'anvers are and the down looks fairly the same on each breed that comes in the mille fleur pattern. looks like you have them all labeled right in your pic

I'm going to do, almost the same combination, except the black mottled girls are going back to the father and I'm putting a Mille hen in with the Blue Mottled hen and Blue Mille Cockerel.

Hello everyone! Our shipment of baby MF D'U came this week (34 plus 2 extra!). Every member of our 4H group gets 4, and in May we will have a chicken show with one class just for our MF to see who rasied the "Best of Breed". We will be learning a lot about breed standards, how to care and raise chickens, and how to prepare and show chickens for competition. I know they will probably not be truly "show quality" on a national level, however, I'm sure they will make wonderful pets for our group. They were shipped from Ideal. Has anyone had any good luck with actually having a true show quality bird from Ideal? Also, can anyone tell by the markings on the chicks which one will mature into better colors? Some have stripes, some are more gray, and some are more tan. They all have the feathering on the middle toe that I've been reading about on this forum, and some already have little beards puffing out. We have one that is so very tiny but very lively and spry. Otherwise, they seem to all be about the same size. Any tips of determining which might be prettier birds based on what you have hatched in the past? Suspense is killing me, and I just have to be patient!

Be patient. There's no way to be sure which will grow up 'prettier'. But I think your 4H group will adore their new birds!!
