D'uccle Thread

There are many different ways to sex a chick. Some ways are better than others but nothing is 100% reliable. So like I said it may not be exact but at least you have a idea instead of just raising them and waiting for a crow or a egg.

I could be wrong here, but my understanding is that feather sexing and fast feathering vs. slow feathering are two different things. Feather sexing must be done within the first two days after hatch. Fast or slow feathering is sex linked so if the parent birds have the gene the resulting offspring can be sexed based on how fast or slow they feather in (I can't remember but I think the gene is for slow feathering?). Two different things, and the problem with the fast or slow feathering method is that after one generation it no longer indicates sex, just like sex links don't breed true, same concept.

I live in WI and there is a local breeder that hatches all his chicks from his farm stock! I will be buying all my future little ones from there. I have a large batch (I already had ordered and paid for)coming from an online place at the end of April. The farm these came from is so clean and nice and you can get a couple of many varieties! Buy local!

I live in Wisconsin too! Does the breeder have a website or anything?

I'm getting ready to set about 15 eggs today. Hoping to hatch them all.
Hey Rusty, you wanting eggs or chicks? I should be able to start to collect you some eggs here in about a week, if you want eggs.

Sold my porcelin booted bantam pair and bought a nice trio of porcelin D'Uccles from a show breeder. Expensive buggers but they sure are cute. I also sold my 3 Mille Roos and now the porcelin trio is with my 4 Millie hens.

Quote: So true. I saw at TSC today 6 black-ish "Assorted Straight-run bantams" Don't have room for more at home so no real temptation there, but I was thinking how I wouldn't buy them because I didn't know what I was getting. I would rather stick with my d'uccles in one color (in my case porcelain) than to feel the need to build another coop for another variety.

I got my three d'uccle chicks on March 1st. My incubator eggs hatched March 4th and 5th, BCM, WM, BO, EE and rumpless Araucana. I put them in with the d'uccle brooder box when they came out of the incubator. I think the d'uccle taught all the other chicks to "Shhhhhhhhh, be very very quiet, no peeping." It is scary how quiet this brooder box of 11 chicks is. I keep looking to see if they are ok. Once in a while I will hear them quietly chirping, not the typical loud screaming PEEP that I would expect. They all play nice too.
