D'uccle Thread

Msticer that is possible! I bought her from a lady that had TONS of different chicken breeds. She told me she was a d'uccle but she is not near as big as the adult breeding d'uccles she had in a breeding pen.

You probably bought her from a hoarder. I only have d'Uccle's, one pen of Silkied feathered Ameuacana's and a coop of about 12 layers. Did she have more then that?
I just got a call from my office. We are on a 10 am delay. Evedintly there is black ice on the roads. We have about a inch of snow. We have a lot of people move here from futher south and they freak out at the minchin of snow. They run to grocery store and buy all the milk and bread. If we do get snow they think because they have a 4wheel drive they can drive in it. It's a mess cars off the road all over the place. First thing they do if they slide is hit the breaks. Crazy... Okay I'm about to go on a tangent. I'll stop now.
Our complete here in Ohio is the slow drivers, the road will be just a covered and even the one's with 4 wheel drive go too slow. Luck you on a delay. My roommate had to go to work it is now 10 * and wind is blowing like Antartica. Now I'm glad I put that heat lamp on my d'Uccle's

... Oh the kicker is we were just told that if we do work tomorrow which we will. They aren't going to close a government office to be prepared that the heat wont keep the office warm... Yeah right I will sit here and freeze my rear off, I feel a sickness coming on. I already have my thermals on and haven't taken my coat off. It was 22* this morning when I got up. That was the high for the day. Its down to 16* now and still snowing, but I can still see the grass so there isn't more than a couple of inches.

I hope my birds are okay because they don't have a lamp or light. Do you think I need to put one in. Its supposed to go down to -1 with a wind chill of -30 tonight.

I would, just until cold snap is over. I locked my birds in. Some of them are dumb and would come out in this. It is already Alaska cold here and I think my windows are going to blow in. Talking about heat, I work for Frito Lay and we have very little heat, it is kept at 55* and in this weather won't heat anything. Glad it is my days off I plan on eating lasagna and going back to bed for next two days and watching netflicks

A ton of people do that hear too. All the grocery stores are out of eggs, milk, and bread when this happens. Anytime there is mention of snow on the weather a ton of people rush to the store and wipe it clean. Because if we have a blizzard milk, eggs, and bread is a necessity. What good is milk going to do if the power goes out. What about water? They are never out of that. Sometimes people crack me up. They complain how much it snows and cold it gets and just want it to be 90 again. Well it is Indiana, what did you expect. Seems like no one around here like winter, just me. apparently I am crazy lol.

It is currently -11. Our high for today was -7. Don't even want to think about the low or what it feels like with the wind chill. It is blowing like crazy and our foot of snow is drifting.

I made sure to go to my daughters house and fill up 5 gallon jugs and we have lots of canned food if power goes out. We bought a kerosene heater years ago for these reasons and dogs and cats and birds are set with food. So you really don't need much. I just went to the store to fix lasagna, the storm never entered my mind until I walked in. Then I was a girl on a mission get the stuff you need and get the he** out. Lines were long, so I went to self check out, in and out within 15 mins. I get off work at 3:30 and my BF gets off at 4pm I ran to the store shopped and was back to get him by 4:12

The lanes and self checkouts are packed, when their is a snow "storm".But no one ever thinks about electronics.

Ahhhh smart. Even if power goes out I still have my phone and laptop both are fully charged and phone has a battery pack with double charge I'm set. But I don't want it to go out as I just set some d'Uccle and Silkied Ameraucana eggs (I've waited 36 weeks for) and don't want to lose them

I don't have heat in my coops, same stuff predicted. it is 5 degrees here, the news says that already the windchill is at -17; with the 3 foot snow bank piled around my coop and the foot of straw in there the coop thermostat is at plus 15 degrees and i don't feel any damp chill at all in there. I had to sit down in there for a min to catch my breath after wading through knee deep snow to get there! Wind is making shoveling useless here.

I do have my d'uccles in the house for the winter, but i also do have a couple month old ee baby out there with his mom. He's doing great, looks cold but eyes are bright and no sign of stress. I did take the precaution of putting the powdered duramycin in the water the last several days; took flack for it because it was "preventative" but mine carry crd; i wasn't taking chances. Their combs seem to redden when i give it to them. My mixed flock of ee, ss, and barred rock is doing great, even henry the ee with the buttercup comb. :)

Should any of you have to deal with frostbite what i did with henry a couple weeks ago was to slather my minted chapstick on his comb when he almost lost one of his points; it was white and purple tipped. After a few days it looks good as new! I think he will keep the point. Any mentholated ointment would work, it is the menthol/ mint that stimulates circulation and the oils help keep the moisture from adhering to the comb.

My advice is to stay away from lamps unless you have a backup if the power goes out. If your coops weren't designed for this cold (I know a lot of states don't usually get this) You can cage them in an unheated basement or garage until the storm passes. The idea is to keep the temps steady for them; it is the huge shifts that kill.

My heat lamps will go out on Wednesday. I don't foresee power going out due to a wind and cold. It has only gone out once due to weather in the 10 years I've lived here, and we got a huge ice storm with over 2 inches of ice, trees down, power lines down, but never wind. It is a bit nippy in my house now but I won't budge on the thermostat, I don't have kids and I can layer clothes or simply go to bed and watch netflicks.
