finally got a porcelain d'uccle

I thought of this, but there really is no other option. They are in an enclosed coop, and with the severity/ suddenness of it, the fact that no one else has gotten ill............ I considered other options too first but he was truly exhibiting poisoning signs. I considered botulism, several lung ailments, mereks, etc. No other matches; and over 2 days i had thrown probably 6-8 broken up apples. I free feed, and that day the feed had gotten eaten to the bottom. The combination of the idea of "starving" or maybe his gullet had gotten down, and he ground them up in there? Did the turd eat ALL of the seeds? I'll never know. I really wish i had a trail cam sometimes! The only other idea i have is someone coming out and doing it; which isn't out of the question as i do know someone with a grudge against my chickens. But i doubt even SHE would do that.


Roo roo (maurice) is doing better! My DH hit upon the idea of making sop with the manna pro chick vitamin water and little pieces of bread. He started sucking those up and is trying to walk today! Horray! Previously i had forced little pieces of watermelon down his beak in an effort to hydrate him. Soft foods now, canned corn and bits of softened pellets, banana, whatever he eats. Old pic but this is the sweetie i fell for and try so hard for. He likes cuddles too and is hopping up into my lap today. So sweet!

Well, his comb is kinda rolled over at the end, but other than that he's in one piece. Just kinda poopy and sticky from the ordeal, and was already in the middle of a hard moult. He's due for a bath soon as possible. A week ago i let 2 bigger hens into their coop, and unfortunately they brought lice. The lice on him are immature so i'm sure that wasn't the reason; also they've been ranging on the same ground all summer so they didn't bring anything that he wasn't already exposed to recently. His eyes are bright and comb is red.

Anyone know other than DE what the most gentle lice treatment would be? Or don't i dare? My usual stuff is too strong for his system right now. I need stuff you might use for a baby i think. I'm leaning towards cat flea shampoo, but nervous about it too. Anyone have any real life experience with this kind of situation? He's walking but still very very weak and i'm imagining still detoxing from his ordeal. DE didn't work for me before during an active outbreak.

Also once a comb rolls over will it ever stand back up? I'm certain it was the dehydration, but it still isn't back up.

That might be the problem, the lice or mites. They will suck the life from a bird. I had a bird I received in the mail covered in mites. I used the hard stuff, I don't know the name of it, it starts with an I, I haven't used it since, I don't normally use anything but natural stuff, but his comb was yellow and I thought he was going to die, I did 2 rounds on his neck, the day I got him and 2 weeks later and doused him in poultry dust once a week, it took 30 days for him to come around and ,his comb finally reddened up.

Nah, i did a flock check just now and i found only one more. His comb has been red, stayed red even through the ordeal. Blood sucking takes the iron, i've seen my bird's combs pink when the lice got bad. no one's pinking either. I do ivermectin drops and the last one was only a month back. These guys just got added a week ago, so though it's mighty uncomfortable it couldn't have done it. the new girls have only been here a week and a half, tops.

Nope, i really do think the guy ate all the apple seeds must be. These guys are tiny, 4-5 apples worth would do it. I know of a human who does eat the whole apple and even he said you feel a tad "off" when you do it; why one would intentionally do this is beyond me. Anyway, he was high energy and bright eyed just 3 hours before i found him on the coop floor. I thought stroke at first, but i've seen stroke and it wasn't like that with the eyes. And he was chilled if anything; heat stroke at the onset they are super hot.

Or i just have a weak roo. At any rate he's well enough to crow and harass the girls, so i'm a happy girl! Personally i'm never taking such a chance ever again. I'll stick to bananas and grapes, watermelon, fish, anything but those! I'm still not sure if he'll be able to go outside for winter though. We are getting an early and hard one this year, it doesn't bode well that he got whatever so late in the year.

that's a mighty sad breeder though. Yellow? I've never seen a bird get so bad and live! does credit to your nursing.

Thank you. The person didn't even tell me until she shipped him, which made me mad since I've never had them before. My BF wanted to send it back. But I couldn't do that.

Oohh...that doesn't sound good at all. Yikes!
Note to self: Meet breeder and check over birds before buying...
