D'uccle Thread

I got my roosters from Ugly Duckly. I hatched only one hen from her, but she died at 1 yr of age

She was such a sweetheart. But the boys have great combs and coloring, one doesn't have the best shoulder feathering, so I'll probably sell him this fall to make room for his progeny. I wish they had a few more feathers on their middle toes, but you know with free ranging those toe feathers don't have much of a chance. I haven't seen her advertise any d'uccle eggs for a while, which is probably good, since I promised my husband 'no more hatches' this year

I wish these girls would start laying, I'm gonna be bald by the time they start lol Delilah has had her red comb for over a month now. Started feeding layer crumbles to maybe boost her on into laying but (a couple weeks later) still waiting.

It's a little difficult to see everything - can't see their feet, but what I can see looks pretty good for the most part. I like the general "look" of both birds. I'm going to assume that the roo is molting and has lost his tail. That is what my roo looks like during a molt. They usually drop their entire tail or at least almost all of it. Your hen is very pretty and carries herself really well. Since I can't see their feet I can't see boots. Some of the way the booting looks is personal taste I think. I've seen birds with really long feathers on their feet, almost as long as primary wing feathers. I personally don't like that - my own roos foot feathering is longer than I like, but this is a trait I a breeding for and not something you can fault your birds for.
I wonder who debeaked them. I know there is no law against it, but it feels like there should be, particularly with the bantams and fancy chickens (non-production chickens) I just don't get it. I'm having a problem with my hens "over grooming" the roo. They've pulled his beard out and some down his neck, but I'm sure not going to cut their beaks off for it. I see it as a problem for me to solve, not something to torture them over. Lazy people............
Sorry your birds got mutilated.

Yeah, I think he's gone through his molt, he's got beautiful black/green saddle feathers growing out now. He's a lil' edgy so my hopes of taking him out to allow for better pic's is just not a posibility right now (still getting used to his new surroundings). He still freaks out when I stick my hand in the cage. Both of the Mille's were breeder birds that Ugly Ducky had purchased (they had already been de'beaked when she got them) I am just super thankful that she offered them to us because, they (to me) are beautiful specimens of the breed!!

I thought enabling was what this forum was about?!?

If these girls would start laying I'm sure we would have extra eggs too!! I am wanting them to start laying so I can put some on the 'egg chain' because I really REALLY want some different colors in the D'uccles (so I can play) and BLRW's , Orph's, LF Cochins and some more Serama lines!! I go out several times a day and hold my breath then open the nestbox, so far tho' it's been a let down.. Delilah has had her red comb for a month and half now but not the least bit into giving up an egg and neither is our mille girl

The roo's are crowing ALL day long but not showing the 'need to breed' so I figure the girls just are not ready yet...
