D'uccle Thread

R.I.P. to our handsome porcelain cockerel.

He began having poopy hocks and was a master of his breed, never showed that anything was wrong, but he hid behind the "girls" when ever I'd go near. Unfortunately I looked him over, range of motion was fine, nothing unusual. Then in a day or two's time, he was hardly able to step on his foot. Still no reason why, seemed like it was to do with his hock. I culled him. :0(
None of my gals seem to have issues, thank goodness.
As for the eggs in my 'bator, the 2 dozen from Arkansas... 14 eggs tossed. Bummer but the rest of the embryo's look good and strong. Shipping is tough on eggs, hot/cool, jiggling and all that jazz. Looking forward to a nice hatch in another week! I love these D'uccle's, they are such sweethearts!
Thanks for reading, appreciate it.

Spook, I am so sorry to hear about your little guy. He really is handsome. What a heartbreaking thing to have to do.

Beautiful... love the thick neck and muff. What do her feet look like?

And it would be nice to see a pic of her "standing up" to get a clear view of her topline shape...

Thanks for sharing!

Entered my self-blue in the Boston Poultry Expo yesterday.

He was the only self-blue, so no competition, but I got some great feedback from folks about him.

Pros: Great body shape, excellent foot feathering (long, thick, and all 4 toes are fully feathered), overall a really nice d'Uccle

Cons: Bleached-out hackles are a no-no for the self-blue variety (from what I've read, it's what happens in the sun, so I would need to keep him inside leading up to show season, yes?), and his comb has extra serrations on the back that are not great, but are acceptable

Feet (not great pic, but you get the idea):

FYI, he is from a batch of eggs I ordered this spring from Leon Valley Trading Co.

you forgot to mention he is a star now!!! lol Did you end up selling him? And did y'all see that foot feathering? Crazzy!

Haha... maybe. (The author of The Fairest Fowl was taking pics at the show, and took some of Blue

I sold him to Jay of Birden Castle Poultry (where my other 2 d'Uccles were bred) for one of his 4H-ers to pair with her porcelain hen. Jay was pretty impressed with him, and I'm so glad he's going to a kid, b/c he's SUCH a sweet baby and loves cuddles. Hopefully this will just be the start of his show and breeding career!

My kids are both into them. They are perfect for kids since they are so calm and cuddly!
