D'uccle Thread

Our D'Uccles love to be outside in the winter down to -20 C no problem as long as they have a draft proof coop and thawed water. we don't heat the coop and have the water in a heated dog bowl. They love to play in the snow. Just keep an eye on the comb and wattles for frostbite.

Very NICE Booteds. The Roo is very eligant looking...how old is your pair? Same here, heated building, fresh water and mine seem to do fine.

I need to take a couple more photos of the baby blues. They are really a pretty color! One is much larger than the other, and I'm praying I have a pair. I can put the roo with my split-to-lav black babes, and the girl in with Parti-boy.
My pet-sitter is in love with Parti-boy. He is definitely in charge of the rooster coop!

As far as winter care, my birds have a building to sleep in, out of the weather. Plenty of shavings on the floor, and also on top of the nesting box where they sleep cuddled together. I only close the pop doors to the runs when the temp dips towards single digits, and only supply enough extra heat that the water doesn't freeze solid (although a crust of ice often forms on the surface).

It is hysterically funny to watch young birds chasing snowflakes! They give me looks that say, "Mom, why does the sky-bread taste like water?" I laugh until I cry on those first snow days. The older birds are more jaded, and their looks say, "Isn't about time you threw us some scratch???!"
