D'uccle Thread

For those of you who have d'Uccle's and standard sized chickens, how do you say they get along? Does the d'Uccle roo do well with standard sized hen? Will a standard roo squish d'Uccle hens? I'm hoping to get some day old d'Uccle and raise them with a little younger standard sized chickens. I need to decide whether to keep a d'Uccle roo or a Standard sized roo (I'm thinking either about Marans or Barnevelders).

I usually keep my bantams away from my large fowl cause they don't get along. I think the only way a d'uccle rooster could is if the hen laid down for him cause Large Fowl hens can get bigger than he can. and yes a standard roo could kill a d'uccle hen and plus it would kill the chick if you decided to incubate. Cause the egg would be small with a big chick inside. I don't think it would work.

I have heard of people that house bantams and standard together, and it worked out. I plan to raise them together, and people say that it work out for them. I don't plan on incubating any mixes, so I should be fine in that area. My plan is to have 2-3 d'Uccle hen s and a roo, and 2-3 standard hens. How does that sound?

I forgot to say thanks for the info about getting D'uccle for 4-H! Thanks!
I am planning on going to the Ohio National November 12 and 13th, so I will keep my eye out for some Porcelains.

That is such a beautiful bird, CrestedGirl! So jelaous!

I would say you could get away with standard hens and bantam roos, but definitely NOT standard roo with bantam hens, particularly a Marans, they are HUGE! I've tried keeping bantam and standard roos together, the bantam roo kept the standard roo in line until the standard found out that he was bigger and stronger, then it was all over. I'm glad I was out there or I might have been minus my favorite roo. I miss my pretty dark eggs, so someday I'll get some hens with no roo.

I hatched some d'uccle mixed chicks out of a smaller spitzhauben hen. D'uccle roosters and standard hens are fine, but I had a bigger mixed too who tried to breed my bantam hens and almost broke their necks stepping on them in the process. Not a good deal. I really liked him too, and had to regime him. Now my large fowl are separate from my bantams, but make sure the bigger hens are younger so the bantam hens can be the top of the pecking order. My salmon favorelle bantam got a chunk bit out of her wing by my New Hampshire dominant hen. Make sure your standard hens are docile and not huge.
