Ducclelover10's chat thread! (Continued)

Hi everybody. I need help. Our cousins in CT want to start an mini farm. They have 3 1/2 acres of land and want to get 20 hens (14 layers, 6 bantams) and 2 roosters. They have 2 dogs (1 chocolate lab, 1 black lab) to guard them, and a good, sturdy coop fit to house 28, so obviously they have enough room for more chickens. They asked me to help them decide what kind of chickens to get. So far for the standard size I have 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Buff Orpington, and 1 Barred Rock. For the bantams I have nothing but a Silkie or two. Any ideas?

I can help with bantams! :) how warm is CT? I would recommend Modern Games, Cornish, or Sebrights, but if the weather is too cold...
A D'Uccle would be an obvious choice. How about Turkens (bantam or standard)? They are the ultimate breed for any climate, IMO. There are also Cochin bantams or Faverolles. Polish are great, and though a bit flighty sometimes, they can be decent layers. Then, there is the classic Old English Game bantam. Honestly, chickens are quite adaptive and cold weather shouldn't be a huge issue. I live in NJ, and we can get some pretty cold winters, and I know tons of people with bantams who do fine without heat lamps. Hopefully I've given you some ideas.

d'Uccles, d'Uccles, d'Uccles! I've never had a better bantam breed!

I think for the bantam hens I'm going to suggest 1 Mille Fluer d'Uccle, 1 Porcelain d'Uccle, 1 Golden Sebright, 1 Silver Sebright, 1 Black Silkie and 1 Porcelain Silkie.
For the roosters I am going to suggest 2 OEGBs
And for the laying hens, 2 Black Australorps, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 1 White Leghorn, 1 Light Brown Leghorn, 1 Splash Marans, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Partridge Cochin, 1 Blue Wyandotte, and one Splash Cochin.

I've had/have all these breeds and great experiences with all of them.

Ducclelover have I shown you my Porcelain d'Uccles? I'd also like you to help me sex them (I think I already know though)
Minie ( this is the one I believe is a rooster)

Dannielle (Danni) (I think is a hen)

Juliet (I believe is a hen)

Beautiful! I think you're right about the first one being a cock, and the second two being pullets!

How old are they?

I have 3 Porcelain d'Uccles, Sophie, Juliet, and Callie. They all looked like either Dannielle or your Juliet when they were young. I'm pretty sure Minie is a cockerel. I'm going to upload pictures of my d'Uccles...
