Duchess hatches babies, saved eggs hatching in bator!

A teachin' job in Gallup is an experience all teachers should have.

Good for your "creativity".

Probably not the best for your sanity.

(I never had patience enuf to be a teacher. I figured, those who wish to learn will learn (by MY rules). Those who don't, don't matter.)

Good thing I was never a teacher!

Duchess is one talented hen! She decided to move her babies down to the bottom kennel which means she kicked Dan and Helena out of their house! Ok, I decided that if she didn't want to be in the second story room I'd move her and her babies to the baby pen about 75 feet across the yard under a nice big tree, that took an act of God and chain mail to do! Ok, so that was about 5:30pm. 8:30 pm I go out to check on them, THEY WEREN'T THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The pen has netting over it, it's chicken wire, has a dog house to sleep in. And they were gone! I ran back in grabbed a flashlight and ran back out to find out where what beast had ripped open the pen and grabbed my poor momma and babies. The pen was fine, no damage. I'm running around frantically searching the area by the pen when my mom walks across the yard and asks what I'm doing because she saw my flashlight running around the yard.

I explained what had happened and that Duchess and her babies were missing. So she goes back and grabs another flashlight and when on her way back to where I was she asked why the Funky Duo (Helena and Dan the Polish) were sitting on top of the dog kennel...............

So I run over there and there is Duches and her babies sitting in the kennel, back in the other pen, where she had kicked them out of their house again. She wants to be in that pen pretty badly I guess. But how the heck did she get her and her babies out of the baby pen, and back into the dog kennel pen that is wrapped in chicken wire so predators can't get in it?????

Well since The Duchess of Evil won't agree to relocate I'm going to have to find a safe-house for Dan and Helena instead! I do have to admit, she is the most protective, territorial, hen I've ever had!

This is a chain link dog kennel, with chicken wire wrapped around it, and blue bread flats along it too,,, I thought it was predator proof, but it's not Duchess proof!

What a pretty little hen!! That sure sounds like one determined momma. You are right to just give up and move the others. She would probably keep on moving them. She must be related to Houdini and inherited his escaping ability!!!

On another note, how are your eggs doing? I need to candle the ones in my incubator.

I candled last night, had a couple of duck eggs that started but then gave up, 1 buff quit, 3 from pen 2 didn't start, 1 from pen 4 started but quit, 4 from pen 3 started then quit. All the others and there are a bunch, are doing fantastic!!!
