Duck #2

Sometimes that happens when they haven't been with another duck for a while. You might want to consider clipping Scuba's wings in the future because mallards are fantastic fliers.

Also, something about a ducklings peeping is scary to older ducks sometimes. I remember when this one duck was dumped at the lake and he was still young enough to be still peeping. He wanted so much to be friends with the other ducks, but his peeping scared away all the adults. Eventually, he was accepted, but for a couple of weeks, everyone ran away from him.

Aww poor thing.

Aww, thats so cute and sad all at the same time. So we're really in trouble now. We went to the feed store to get another lamp bulb, and there were still 4 ducks in the box...it was a sign, because they usually sell within an hour or two of being put out in the box...so we may have purchased duckling #2 today....BUT now the other duckling isn't peeping/screaming anymore. They cuddle together and seem to be friendlier now!

We're hoping Scuba will warm up to them better when they are bigger and look more like her and don't make such weird noises. Scuba is scared of everything right now... grass moving, anything.

Scuba will like them once they begin to act more like ducks lol it's normal for them to be afraid, to them those littles are for outer space. Okay so how many did you get? and where are the pics?

Ok, so Easter weekend was a success. We were nervous about leaving Scuba here at our house while were out of town, but she did great! We learned that she is terrified of being in the dark, so we left our backyard lights on for her. We had the hose on, dripping water into her bucket, and it was obvious that she gave herself a bath or two in it while we were gone ;) We came home last night and she was just chillin' in her bucket. She still had her water and food half full (in her house) and there was still water in the bin that she was sitting in. We put a few shavings in the house so that it reminded her of her old box. Here's the pics:

Hey yall! Like my new house?

The baby duckies went out of town with us, and have grown a lot just in the last 4 days. Its nuts! The one with the little pink anklet is Dora...the name came from her first hour of being at our house. She decided to get up on her stuffed animal, jump out of the box, explore the room, go under the bed, and wedge herself between the wall and a box. So that adventurous one is named Dora. The other one is currently being called "No Name", but she loves to cuddle and follow Dora... she is very quiet too!

Dora (standing) and No Name (hiding).

Today they are 8 days old, so they'll be introduced to the paint tray bath (supervised, of course)! We think we will introduce them when they get a little bit bigger and less likely to get hurt by a scared Scuba.

So cute. It looks like Scuba's bill is turning lighter. That might signal that he is a boy. Watch for it to turn green (boy) or orange-ish (girl) or listen for a raspy quack or a loud quack-peep.

Is that pink band expandable? If not, then be careful it doesn't get tight on her leg. Sorry, I'm just a worrywort.

Right now Scuba has a raspy peep noise...it used to be a loud peep and quack, but its a bit raspy now. No green on her head yet, and she has the continuous white strip on her wing that we've been told is a tel-tale female marking. But we shall see :) We just noticed her feet are getting yellow now....

We cut off the band the other day when we noticed she was growing. I didn't want it to be too tight, so we found another way to figure out who is who. Dora has black feet, a bigger stripe through her eye, and a completely black bill. No name has a pink tip on her bill, gray-ish feet, and a smaller black stripe through her eye. :)

I'd like to see an outstretched wing to see the tertial coverts.... kinda looks like a drake to me.

Those ducklings are so adorable.. and Scuba looks so grown up. Nice palce you have made for her/him are you going to go larger when you move the girls out there?

We will try to get a picture of Scuba's wing...she is not too fond of us touching her anymore. We also noticed she does not have the curled "sex feather" that everyone talks about with 2 month old ducks. Not even a slight curl in sight.

We already talked about making the run bigger for Scuba so that we can add a larger area for her to walk around and have a kiddie pool in there. When the girls are grown they will definitely be in a larger living space.
