Hey all, I was looking for some advice and info on whether to get a few magpie or pekin ducklings this spring.Im looking to add these ducks (hopefully females) as a companion to my single pekin female and for egg production.Ive really been searching for an adult female of any breed but haven't been able to find any.Ive raised pekins before and had a young Cayuga and know a lot about those breeds.I had some questions about magpies that im unsure about.Ideally I would like to put these ducks out asap within 4-5 weeks to be with my adult.Id also like to be able to tell whether they are male or female within a few months.Do magpies have a similar growth rate to pekins? Also Ive been told that its very hard to tell between sexes until magpies are about 6 months or even older.I know that they are not as big as pekins nor are they as boisterous and are very friendly which is all very appealing. The info I gather will help me make my decision soon and would really like to hear from some of you who have had magpies in the past.Again the end goal for me is to get them out soon and also find out their sex sooner than later. (unfortunately neither breed I will obtain will be sexed and don't feel comfortable trying to vent them).Cant wait to get some feedback!! Thanks!!!!

Not sure if this helps, but I crossed my male magpie with my female pekins in the fall. the offspring are now fully grown, and are BEAUTIFUL. they lay large, healthy eggs. honestly I think I got the best of both breeds.

Thanks I appreciate the input.Any little bit of info helps.I don't have a lot of space a little more than an acre so Im planning to pick up 2-3 ducklings and hope that I end up with all or mostly females.I don't plan on mating or breeding and mainly have the ducks as pets and layers.Im really interested in Magpies but I just don't know a lot about them except from things ive read here.
