Duck Attacked by Raccoon (Wound)

Since my neighbor chopped up my electric fence with a weed eater I've lost 2 hens. I only free range my flock randomly now. They have a predator proof coop and runs for nights .Sorry for your loss.Your boy looks very sad
We secured everything & have had no more losses so far. The crazy raccoon even went as far as tearing up singles on the chicken coop roof! He’s much happier now & feisty! He’s just ready to go out with his friends, he’s been cooped up inside for a while now.

I usually put a few small bites of bait in front of the trap with more and bigger pieces inside. They get the first bites with no problem and then they want more. I also try to cover the trap with a few
I used a brand new trap and put a hot dog with marshmallows and caught my two.
We used a brand new trap and a pork chop with maple syrup and marshmallows & it still didn’t work! We’ve tried catching him on multiple occasions & he either doesn’t go in, or he gets in gets the bait & manages to get out! We need a better trap I’m thinking.

OK, It looked above the wing on the body to me. It could be bones And if so will probably heal better and easier than if it were ribs.
I’m hoping it heals. My biggest concern is infection, but he’s made it this long & has only improved, so I would hope we’re over the risk. He’s inside & I clean his wound multiple times a day.

Pallets would make a secure duck house once it was covered with hardware cloth .It would also improve the quality of his life and greatly increase the odds of him surviving.Watching his flock mates die could be why he looks so sad in the picture.Poor fella!

They all sleep in the chicken coop with the chickens now. They were secured in the outer part of the coop, but the raccoon tore through the chicken wire. We have a very secure set up now, so we don’t have to worry about anymore losses. He looks sad because that’s his injured eye, both eyes look normal now☺️

I don't have an issue with aerial predators (under all the trees) or coons and possums(at night) but I have to put my dogs out with my chickens when they free range or I wouldn't have a chicken left.

Depending on traps to protect your chickens is futile.By the time you catch them all half or all of your flock could be be dead or injured. You need a secure coop for your birds esp at night sorry
?

My coop is secure. Nothing has ever gotten into it.

My advice was on suggestions to get a predator to go in a trap if you are trying to trap one because they are smart and tough to get in a trap.

Let the trap sit outside so it doesn't have any kind od new smell. I have set the trap with bait so the door won't close a few times. Then set it on a lighter setting so it will trigger.

I use mine mostly for groundhogs and bait with what ever thay've been eating in the gardenm usually cabbage.

I also trapped a raccoon that was eating the vole poison baits out of the vole bait dispensers by throwing a couple of blocks of vole poisin inside.

Obviously you can't put a duck out there, But if it gets used to coming it will eventually get comfortable in the trap.

It sounds destructive and it will keep coming back so you need to find a permanent solution. :(

I've read coons will go in a trap with no bait so how hard is that?
LOL. Try that when you really need to trap one. Maybe there was still a food smell in there or maybe it was curious. IDK

Maybe New England raccoons are really smart. Wicked smaaht!!
Everyone I know around here has to work for it. Tuna and cat food are our best baits. I lucked out that mine was already addicted to vole poison blocks.
