Duck body language?

Oh! I get it! Thanks so much clearing it all up for me...I guess I kinda figured it was courtship stuff, I was just a little confused as to why they were showing this kind of behavior right at the beginning of fall, I'm glad to hear its all just normal behavior for this time of year...cause I was starting to think I had some...uh...precocious ducks on my hands XD

After the babies of summer are all raised and the males get back into breeding plumage, courtship behavior gets really strong. They will mate/breed all year around, but it seems to amp up in the fall and winter.

In our area, they actually start hatching ducklings in late January and February, sometimes.

Wow...I always thought their laying season began in about April and may...its kinda cool to hear they can start so early in the year XD

Our two females do the head bobbing thing all the time! Thing is, the do it when they are together as well as when they are with the drakes, and did it before we even got the drakes! It looks like they're chatting to each other when they do it

They also (all 5 of them) stand still and put their head to one side and look up... not sure what that one's about, but they all do it!

When I had the boys away from the girls, and the boys got lonley, and they thought the smalest drake was a girl and well.................. You get the picture lol.

My ducks do that when a plane goes overhead, or a bird flies by. I call it the duckie stare. It looks so funny. LOL

Ha ha! Mine to the "Duckie Stare" too! For the same reasons. We live under a flight plan so planes fly over constantly, typically the smaller ones. Once in a while a loud one will come through or a low one and they stop and stare at it flying over. They also stare at other ducks that fly over, big flocks of birds, and they do tend to notice the hawks and eagle's as well. Oh, I forgot, they were checking out a bunch of baloons someone let go too.

I'm so glad for this topic too! I've noticed my Pekins doing the same thing and thought that might be what they were "saying".
Has anyone seen this? I have two females and a male (18 weeks old). One day while I was out with them they put the top of their heads together and all three stayed like that for a minute or two in a "huddle" while quacking softly. I've only seen it once, though I'm not out with them as much as I'd like to be

It was adorable
