We have 12 ducklings...how big would you make the brooder?? They are just in tubs right now, but wanting to build a wood brooder. How much room do they need??

Between .75 sq/ft to 1.5 sq/ft. More sq/ft is needed as they get older. Hope that kinda helps you.

Thank you. It does help. I just needed somewhere to start before I build a bigger brooder for them.

I have a wooden shipping crate that I use. It is a little bit over 2x3 feet and has housed 12 ducklings. You won't be able to go much past 2.5 weeks with that size, but by then they should be able to be moved into a heated duck house. Twice the size would be better, so you don't have to clean 3-5 times per day.

This is what we ended up building. It's 2ft wide by 7ft long. For the next week or 2, we put a divider in it so the chicks are on one side and the ducklings are on the other. Once it warms up, we'll be building another brooder for the chickens and they will all be in the garage.

I used a long rubbermaid tub (it came with a lid but I didn't use it !) for that many ducklings, for the first couple of weeks, then moved to something bigger later (two large cardboard appliance boxes taped together with liner)

I'm not sure about the actual measurements but for 12 ducklings you better make it BIG. They grow so fast. Unless you don't mind if there snug. I feel bad having an animal caged in a small area. I have just (1) duckling I hatched 2 weeks ago & I'm on brooder #2 & was just last night saying how I need something Bigger. Lucky Ducky can put his head to the top when he/she wants..And 12 at the same time... your in for a long 7 weeks or so, I Can't believe just from 1 duckling how much it can poop. Good luck, ~Julie

This is my big brooder down in my spare room. You can put your ducks in, its easy to clean. If you get a small pool you might have to use cardboard round the sides. This is a big pool from Walmart and its about 1 1/2 feet hight so the ducks cant jump out. I had my 2 duckling in this when they were 8 weeks old just before they went outside and they never attempted to jump out.
