Duck bug hunting... and at night?

I have two Jumbo Pekin ducks and they are always out and about at night. From what I have read ducks have excellent night vision.

My ducks don’t really forage, but I fo throw out dried meal worms for them to look for for some enrichment activities. They with dig their beaks into the mud after it rains for bugs…. But that is about it.

I feed mine a half and half mix of frozen peas or corn, and duck feed. I get mine from my local feed store. I used to feed them chicken feed until I learned about how ducks need a specific level of niacin intake. The Purina feed I use has the proper amount of niacin in it. I also put a little water in the mix so turn it into a bit of an oatmealy mix, so they don’t choke on the dry kibble.

My ducks would all hunt for bugs at night I used to never close there coop at night until a fox came along and kept on trying to kill them. So now all my birds get locked up every single night. I miss seeing them out at night chasing bugs.

My neighbor across a busy street has coyote & maybe fox killing her ducks, chickens and even one of her turkey's. I'm hoping they stay over there but with little left to prey on I'm afraid they'll discover my ducks. I'm hoping the chain link fence will deter them.

In one respect I miss summer (not the hot weather) because me & the duck flock would go cricket hunting at night. I'd kinda shuffle my feet stirring up crickets and they'd grab them up.

But we still do some worm digging which they love. One sees that little yellow rake and comes running knowing it worm time! :D

My ducks are good for my health. I get a lot of exercise walking & digging with them. 😁
