Me and my friend were walking around a pond at her sister's apartment when we came across a nest of Muscovy duck eggs. She told me I should take one home to try to hatch it. So I took it from the nest (the mother and father who were standing right there didnt seem to mind) and brought it home. I built an incubator.

I now only have one problem: I have never hatched anything other than a chicken which I did in elementry school! I have candled the egg and it looked somthing like this...

(I couldn't get a real picture). Does that mean it is alive? How old is it? How am I suppose to hatch it? Do you have any other instructions? Answers would be greatly appreciated.

it might be alive. since you dont know how old it is its hard to say. the light spot at the end are the air sacks. by day 7 in the bator you will start to see blood vains. if you dont see anything try again at day 10. if still nothing then your egg isnt fertal. the vains will be very easy to see!

You shouldn't have taken the egg from the nest. It is against the law. I don't know what your friend was thinking. Well anyway if you candle it in another few days you should see veins and maybe an embryo if you don't see that now. And I am incubating duck eggs now and if still air between 100 and 102 degrees. If a forced air incubator 99.5 degrees. Humidity has to be higher than chicken eggs. It has to be between 55 and 63%. Turn 3 times a day. And they hatch in 28 days except for muscovy duck eggs like you have they take 35 days, but it is a problem that you don't know how old the egg is because since you have to stop turning and raise the humidity during lock down, you won't know when to do that and if you stop turning and raise the humidity at the wrong time, the duck inside the egg will most likely die.

Ok good! I was freaked out that it might be dead. Ive spent my entire weekend making sure everything was right. The embryo moved last time I candled it. Is that a good sign?

and to duck lover: Im pretty sure it's not against the law where im form and my friend wanted me to do it because there were people going around smashing the eggs. And I saw day by day pictures of candling on a website and the egg looks about 4 days old.

yes it will stay active until it runs out of room

you will be able to see into your egg better if you do it in a black room like the bathroon with the lights off
good luck!
