So we have hatched ducks before and it went very smoothly! Two beautiful ducks. Sadly, this time, the outlook is not so good!!! We ordered off a person on eBay that got hundreds and hundreds of wonderful reviews. We are at around day 31 or 32, by our calculation. We could feel the ducks moving inside their egg, but still not pips, so we pipped them for them, just to give them a headstart (they were internally pipped.)The first one did not seem to have an internal pip, in which case we will now have to make one for it? I've never assisted with hatching before! The second one was obviously very alive and internally pipped. So we did this on Monday night and now it is Thursday, and they had not started unzipping yet, so I started reading a very detailed blog on assisted hatching and started up. The duck is almost at the stage where it could hop out on its own!

Just a few questions.

The membrane is stuck to the duck. any ideas on how to take it off without peeling off the duck's feathers and possibly hurting him?

Second, the veins have receded, but I am not sure about the yolk. Sometimes it lingers even after the veins go away. i would be horrified if my duck ended up like some of the ones on those eggtopsys!!! And for it to be my fault.

The chick is really kinda struggling to get out. Do you think he needs water?

Lastly. Anyone have suggestions? We keep taking him out of the incubator and taking little by little of his membrane. Do you think we should just kind of do it all at once?

freaking out

sorry i dont know how to upload pictures, sorry. I can describe them more if I need to

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it sounds like he is shrinkwrapped you need to get him out of the egg and assist him because he wont be able to get out by himself if the membrane is stuck to him take warm water and wet the membrane if the veins receded then most likely he already absorbed the yolk the one that didn't internally pip i would do that for him take this slowly if you rush this they could go into shock a chick can live up to three days on yolk that he absorbed

what kind of ducks are these

Thank you so much! I think you're right an I am going to wet him. That was one of my guesses. They are mallards. Any idea about the other one? It hasn't internally pipped yet!

Never mind about the other duck. you already answered. Can we use a wet q-tip to internally pip the other one? Or should be use bacitrin?

The q-tip would be dipped in bottled water to make the internal pip. But after we make a very careful opening, slowly, what next??? Do we try and hatch it completely, or give it another day to break out on its own? It is not very lively, but still breathing.

Hello there are so many of us hatching eggs. I have done many batches over the years with my kids. This is our 1st year successfully hatching calls. And even with all the internet help and differences of opinions I called a hatchery this morning. Calls need high humidity like 94 percent and my little eco won't go that high. Soooo we are helping baby number 2 today like yourself. Just like pp take it slow and if it bleeds stop and wait another 2hhers give water drinks with a dropper. If you get to the bottom and see the yolk STOP and keep it warm and let it take its time absorbing under a heat lamp. It will live and absorb just fine. We just went thru that last week and he is great.

Yes, warm water and take your time. If ever in doubt, wrap in warm, damp paper towel and put back in the incubator. I had humidity issues once in a house I lived in and had to assist chicks all the time. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the replies!!!! I am so grateful. When we weren't looking, the little duckling hopped out while it was in the incubator! He is really tired, but quite a strong little duck! I believe the yolk is still on him, but it might not be. I don't think that he would be jumping out if the yolk wasn't absorbed. Anyways, thanks for all the help. He will be happy and healthy. His name is Billy. (Not sure if it is a girl or boy, but we saw the bill first!)

THANK YOU ALL! I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT YOU GUYS!
