Hens go broody when you don’t want them to… and won’t go broody when you do.

One of my 11 duck eggs has just pipped. I know they usually pip a day or two before they hatch, but this one is 6 days early!!! Is there any reason for this, and is it normal? I only hatched ducks once before, and this didn't happen.
