duck food and slugs

Or you could sit the food in a tray of ashes or salt as the slugs can't cross it without being dried out.
I wondered about that but how likely are they are to eat the salt? Or would they try a bit and quickly decide its not so appetising?
I think if I did it here and the food was in a shallower type feeder the rain would soon cause a wet salty mess that would get into the food anyway

Oh and op, if you do try the salt route then just note it doesn't dry them out, it melts them, as I once found out to my horror! :sick

The salt dries the slugs out once they scoot over it, it absorbs into their system. The melting is probably just them decomposing. ;)

No, definitely not a pretty sight! Found a slug in my kitchen once when I was younger and thought I'd put some salt on it cos they always say salt for protecting plants from slugs and snails don't they.... Never again!! It basically dissolved before my eyes and the guilt still gets to me 15 or so years on :(
