duck gone broody

Conquered may have been too strong of a word, but this is my setup and you can see the mess is consolidated on the puppy pad in the feeding area instead of EVERYWHERE...

The feeding area is the bottom half of a pet carrier. The sides of it catch the food they sling every time they eat and the puppy pad catches the water they dribble. The shavings are still nice and dry around the other parts of the POol 12 hours later. That's a record for me!

Nice set up!

It is working very well right now. All I had to do this morning was change the puppy pad out. Much better than the stinky soggy mess it usually is.

They haven't had any play time outside since the temperatures have been chilly, but when they get feathered out i hope to introduce them back to their momma.

It's to get into 50's here tomorrow, should be warmer over your way, I'd take them out side at 4 weeks they can take that temp. just don't let them get wet like in a pool. lol

My ducklings that stay with mom are sometimes in temps of 50's and do fine.

. They are 4 weeks now and will be 5 weeks Saturday. Do you think if I moved them outside with a heat lamp in the coop at night they would be OK? They aren't fully feathered yet, but are close.

Will they be with the adults? that can be risky. I think I'd take them out on nice days when temps are in high 50's and it isn't windy let them gradually get use to the temps but not completely take them out and leave them until fully feathered. Unless you will have them in their on space so no one can bully them and not let them under the lamp. That's the worrisome part getting chilled. or wet. maybe another week inside over night. And using a heat lamp in a coop can be dangerous so keep that in mind too. Are they using heat inside?
