Ducks will lay for a week or so before sitting on them so i would take a few for the incubator then let her alone for a week if she's old enough to lay she will probably sit them =) if you give her layer you could probably get a bigger clutch, that's what I do anyways. Good luck!

My duck eggs go into lockdown tomorrow so I figured I'd have a peek with the flashlight and put them into my hatcher tonite, glad I did too. 8/10 piping already =)

How long do you wait before you start considering intervention? I have some duck eggs I put in the incubator, we are now on day 31. 1 pipped, I haven't seen anything from the rest. The one who pipped did it yesterday, and hasn't made any progress yet. I candled before lock down and they were all moving around.

So I guess my questions is how long is normal for a long but still successful hatch? Is there really anything that can even be done if they haven't externally pipped?

You could try candling them to see if there is any movement and whether they have pipped internally or not.

That's quite a while. I would safe hole all of them and you will probably have to help them out. You could start with the one that has pipped with no progress.

I help at day 29, I at least know they won't die. Longer than that and you're risking them dying IMO.

Thanks for the link, I'll go read through it. On a good note, the one who has been pipped for awhile is making some progress, another pipped, and another went from pip to hatch while I was gone today. So they are starting, although I suspect I've already lost a couple of them. My chicks who were set so they would all have the same "due date" also started hatching late, but now that they are going they are getting it done.

I had 4 thermometers and kept the temp right between 99 and 100 but based on these late hatches I still think the temps were off (low). Next time I'll bump it a little in the temp.

I candled them and only saw movement in the ones that have pipped so I took a risk and opened one egg up. The duckling is dead, looks like it quit just a few days ago. It's formed, just has some yolk still attached.

I suspect this isn't my only one.

Awww. I'm so sorry.

I don't know about reasons for them to quit, I'm only on my second hatch and still trying to learn as much as I can. Did it pip internally? They are supposed to pip before they finish up their yolk sac and then they learn to breath while it is absorbed.

Well I just got the bator all set for lockdown and went ahead and candled the eggs. All 3 look like they have developed quite well and all three of them kicked and moved around for me!

The air cells look like they developed better than the earlier chicken eggs did. So hopefully won't have any hatching troubles.
