My duck hatched babies yesterday morning and she refuses to allow me near them. I understand that's nature and she's doing what she's suppose to be doing but why won't she let me see them? she puffs up at me and tries to bite, which she did several times. But she allows my drake to pick the duckling up by the head and drop it. I have since separated him from the tinys. Basically sealed off an area for her and the babies.
I just want to see how many babies hatched but this woman won't have it lol.
Will she ever allow me to?
Or is this going to be how she is the whole time?
First duck to ever hatch their own so this is new to me.
I've had quail hatch babies but they didn't act so snarly..

What breed? Some hens are more protective than others. She will remain protective until they get a bit bigger. Usually when they can't fit under her anymore.
X2

However, she will bring them off the nest in a couple of days to begin teaching them what to eat and where water is. You'll get to see them all soon, no worries. ;)

I'm not sure about duck behavior, but I can tell you that my momma Turkey wouldn't let us near her baby until it was about 6 weeks old. Even then, she was watchful. The baby was sick, so I had to remove it from her. She searched for it for 3 days.

She's mixed. Half Indian Runner and half Pekin. I peeked this morning and saw two babies but she opened her mouth snarling tounge out and all.. the babies ran for their lives and smashed their butts right back under her.. I hope they learn to like me and I'm not an enemy... mama seems to be tellin them I'm an evil monster I guess. Watch them be full grown before I can even say hello. I waited 28 days too mama why can't we share them lol.

I am always involved with my mama duck and her babies. I will sit in with them and observe what they are doing this is after a few days of hatching so mama has had them to water and feed. My mamas usually get over being real protective with me because I have to go in and clean up the poop daily and they are use to me anyway. I don't pick the ducklings up but I do enjoy watching mama and ducklings together. Ducklings raised by a mama duck have to learn for themselves we are the boogie man and mine learn it by the dried meal worms I toss out. Best way in the world to get them use to you.

7 babies hatched. Mama has gotten up a few times but is still sitting on some eggs. Is that normal? She is getting much more friendly again and doesn't mind me petting the babies.

When did these ducklings hatch? do you have food and water close by? If it's been longer than 3 days I believe I'd candle the rest may not be viable.

So happy for you that mom is doing better and your getting to touch the little ones now they are adorable.
