Hello everyone so I have a two week old duck and I think she has a fever. Her bill and feet are hot at times but cold at others, whenever she’s in her brooder, she pants and her tail moves. The brooder is not too hot, and I occasionally turn off her heat lamp to make sure that’s not the problem. She had plenty of water to dip her head in and drink. Her feed is unmedicated and I have recently started putting brewers yeast in it. This has been going on for over a week and I have tried multiple things to try and help. Her brooder has pine shavings. My room is not that clean and I have dogs and dust. Could it be possible that the dust or dog hair in my room is affecting her? Again, she only pants heavily when in the brooder. No where else. Her nostrils are a little blocked but I can still see through them. She occasionally sneezes.

Does she have a cool spot in the brooder? They need a place to get away from the heat. She could be just too hot. Is she an only duckling?

I've had this problem when I bought cedar shavings so I had to immediately switch h to pine what bedding are you using?

She is a grimaud Pekin hybrid
Pekins are big fat ducks and she's doing a LOT of growing in her first 4 weeks to get that way, they overheat pretty easy. Mine panted a lot even when I had the a/c blasting and the humans in the house felt like it was freezing. We were putting on pants and long sleeves and socks in the middle of July so I could cool the ducks down.

They also panted for who knows what reason - if they were in their indoor pen in direct line of the A/C they'd pant but if I let them out they'd lay on a towel on the floor under the dining room table only 3 feet away from their pen and be perfectly fine. Always panted when I brought them to the living room. Didnt pant in the bedroom or bathroom. Just something goofy about them.

Anyway if panting is her *only* issue she's probably just hot. You can try wrapping an ice pack snugly in a dishtowel and putting it in the brooder for her to lay on, mine only used theirs sometimes. Make sure her water stays clean and she can always wash her nose out.

Is her sister still using the heat lamp? I took mine away earlier than most people recommend because my two just would not go anywhere near it and it was cutting off the amount of space they could use in their pen.

They still use the heat lamp but I think it’s because they’re congested?

Do they get chances to swim and clean themselves? If you’ve got a tub give them some warmish water to splash around a bit, mine cleaned out their noses better when they were swimming than in their drinking water. The warm water will help break up whatever’s in their nostrils.
