My duck layed an egg for the first time today. She did leave her egg, so I took it and put it in the fridge. I have no intentions of eating it, but I don’t want ducklings. I have two ducks (a male and female). I cannot care for any more ducks. What do I do? Do I continue to take them away every time she lays an egg? Will she lay one everyday? She is 5 months old. I believe she is a runner. Will she remember she layed an egg? I feel bad. Any advice will help.

She will probably lay everyday or close to that. I have a pekin female and she lays most every day. I would just keep takening them away. Mine has never tried to lay on them and she is 3 now. But if they sit there and she doesn’t lay on them they will go rotten and smell. You can eat them if you want or give them to someone. We eat hers and they are great. But count as 2 eggs when we bake. My grandpa loves our duck eggs. Dont feel bad. Unless she chooses to lay on them she isn’t interested in keeping them around either. If she chooses to lay it is sad to take them away but sometimes you need to do that so you can continue to take care of who you have now. My chickens will eat their own eggs sometimes so they don’t care if you take them. Congrats on your new ducks :)

Runners are naturally not a very broody breed. They don't care about their eggs, or about trying to hatch their eggs. You can take them with impunity. They're also one of the most prolific layers, so expect many more.

Unless she does go broody (if she goes broody, she'll want to sit on a nest and raise ducklings. But that's rare with runners. She'd definitely care about her eggs if that happened, though.) How do people break broody ducks, @Miss Lydia?

Never had a broody Runner yet and mine are going on 3yrs old neither of my 2 Buff females haven’t gone broody either same age as Runners but now my Muscovys well that’s a different story altogether. Since 2004 I have tried various ways to break them honestly nothing works so now I just let them run the course with no eggs under them it doesn’t matter to them I just make sure they come out at least 1x a day to eat poop and bath so far I haven’t lost any doing it this way. My Runners could care less if I take their eggs away once it’s laid it’s completely forgotten

How do you know if the duck will hatch the eggs she lays? I dont see her nesting alot on the eggs but know she moves them around. How long does it take to hatch?
