Duck lays almost all double yolk eggs...Is this normal??

Aww thank you! That's my odd couple, Monkey the cat and his best friend Bella the drake. lol When Bella was an only duck last year, he was forced to fraternize with the feline.

WOW!! Double yokers in the eggs? I have raised Pekins before, never came across a double yoker though. I am now raising Scovies, and I get an egg a day from each of my hens, unless they are sitting on them. I currently have 5 hens sitting on eggs, the other four are just starting their nests. I am going to be overrun with a bunch of duckies pretty soon, and my drake, Luckey, is one luckey boy!

And to aduckstolemyheart , priceless photos, thanks for sharing with us!

I know, totally crazy right? 8 out of her last ten eggs have been doubles. I looked on google, and saw that some birds may be genetically predisposed to laying doubles, but it seems it may just be because she's a new layer. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

I wanted to incubate some of her eggs but a poster here told me I should wait til next season. And now with all the double yolkers I am afraid I'd have trouble hatching. I keep hearing stories about twins being hatched before and a part of me is dying to try it!!

Thanks by the way, I always love showing pics of the silly duck and the cat. It always makes me feel good to watch them. <3

I too, have a pair of Peking Ducks. They are male and female and both 10 months old. The females eggs are mostly double-yolked. I found the answer here and I'm glad I now know this is the site to come too.

I also understand Peking's seldom brood their eggs. Is there any way of teaching them to go broody, such as leaving several large stone eggs on her nest, or simple chicken eggs just to see if she'll sat? Will I be wasting my time and eggs to boot?

She always lays in the same spot and actually slightly covers her eggs with straw--as if to hide them from view. Have any ideas on getting the gals broody?

Thanks so much, Oledihard

Aduckstolemyheart....love your pix. The cat & duck together are absolutely ADORABLE! Please post more pix!!!!! I especially love to see them playing together. I totally love your screen name too....... I t hought I would be raising "livestock" & my ducks stole my heart too...... especially the Pekins.

All my ducks are laying double yolked eggs. They are on a mixture of Layena and Flockraiser 2:1. I also provide oyster shell but they dont ever touch it. They get lettuce and peas at night and forage in their yard during the day. They have been laying for a couple months now I think.
